Alyssa Arwood: (2011–2015) Alyssa was an outstanding swimmer at TC Roberson. She was All Conference and qualified for the 4-A State Championship meet all four years. In her senior year, Alyssa was the 4-A State Champion in the 100 breaststroke and set the state meet record in that event. She also finished 7th in the 50 freestyle, and her 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams placed in the top six at the 2015 state meet. She was named an All American. The year prior, Alyssa placed 3rd in the 100 breaststroke and 4th in the 50 freestyle at the state meet. For all her outstanding accomplishments in her senior year, Alyssa was chosen as the Western North Carolina Female Athlete of the Year in 2015. While at Roberson, she was the MAC conference 2015 Swimmer of the Year, named an academic All American, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. Alyssa set and still holds the TC Roberson school records in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle. Alyssa also swam in the YMCA club program, qualifying for eight YMCA National Championships. In her YMCA career, she was a five-time National Champion in three breaststroke events, setting a national record in the 100 yard breaststroke in 2015. After graduating from Roberson, Alyssa was recruited to Duke University where she swam as a Blue Devil all four years. While at Duke, Alyssa was a three-year member of the All ACC Honor Roll. She finished with the 8th best time ever recorded at Duke in the 100 breaststroke. She graduated from Duke University with a BA degree in Public Policy Studies. Alyssa began her career as a business analyst at Capital One and then worked in human resources and business operations at a private equity firm in New York City. She is now pursuing her MBA from Columbia Business School to graduate in May 2025 and lives and works in the New York City area.
Mark Hemphill: (1991–1995) Mark played varsity baseball for two years and varsity soccer for four years while at TC Roberson. Mark started on the varsity soccer team all four years that he played. He was a 3-time team captain. He was a 3-time All Conference and a 3-time All Region player. He was 2-time Region 10 Player of the Year. He was a 2-time, first team All State player. In both his junior and senior years, Mark was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All South team. His TCR teams were 3-A Regional Runner-up, 2-time 3-A Regional Champions and 2-time 3-A State Runner-up. Mark was 2-time TCR Offensive Player of the Year and the team Player of the Year following his senior season. Following his senior season, Mark was named to the NC East-West All Star team. He was also named an Academic All Star by the NC High School Athletic Association. He was the recipient of the US Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete award. He finished his high school career with 135 goals and 68 assists. In his senior season, his team was ranked in the top 10 in the US. After graduating from TCR, Mark was awarded a full, four-year scholarship to play soccer at Appalachian State University where he was a four-year starter. At ASU, he was 2-time team captain. He was a 4-time All Conference player and twice was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week. He was named ASU’s Most Valuable Player in his junior year. He finished his college career with 16 goals and 12 assists. He was a 4-time Athletics Academic Honor Roll and Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll member. He also achieved the Chancellor’s List or Dean’s List in all semesters while at ASU. Mark graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in Business Administration. Following graduation from ASU, Mark joined the Biltmore Company as a Marketing Analyst. While with the Biltmore Company, Mark has served as Director of Marketing for Biltmore’s lodging and wine business, Director of Marketing and Revenue Management for Biltmore’s lodging and destination business, Vice President of Marketing for Biltmore’s destination business, and Senior Vice President of Marketing. Mark currently serves as Biltmore’s Chief Marketing Officer. Mark is married to Kelly Batson Hemphill, a TCR graduate and was a member of a 3-A State Championship tennis team. They have five children, Caroline, Ben, Brooks, Anna, and Elizabeth.
Joel Jackson: (1999- 2003) Joel played varsity basketball his senior year and ran track for three years while at TC Roberson. In basketball, Joel’s team finished the season with a 29-1 record. They were conference champions, conference tournament champions, 3-A Sectional champions and the 3-A West Regional Runner-up. On senior night, Joel started and scored his teams first 11 points with 3 for 3 three-point shooting, all in the first 5 minutes of the first quarter! In track, his teams were 2-time Conference champions, 2-time Buncombe County champions, 2-time West Regional champions and were 3-A State Runner-up in 2003. Joel competed in multiple sprint events: the 200m, the 4 x 100m relay, the 4 x 200m relay, and the 4 x 400m relay. In the 200m, Joel was a 2-time Buncombe County champion, a 2-time MAC conference champion, and 2-time West Regional champion. Joel was the 3-A State champion in the 200m in 2003. He broke the school record for the 200m four times and is the current record holder in that event (21.62). His 4 x 100m relay team were 3-A West Regional champions. They were the 3-A State champions in 2003. That team is TCR’s current record holder in that event (42.44). Joel’s 4 x 200m relay team were 2-time Buncombe County champions, 2-time conference champions, and 2-time 3-A West Regional champions. That team is TCR’s current record holder in that event (1:28.4). His 4 X 400 relay team were Buncombe County champions, 2-time conference champions, and 2-time 3-A West Regional champions. They were the state 3-A State champion Runner-up in 2003. After graduating from TC Roberson, Joel attended St. Augustine’s University, graduating with a BA degree in communications. He also ran track at St. Augustine’s. Joel works for the Will Group as a production manager, living in Chicago, IL suburbs with his wife, Tilisa, and sons, Christian and Maverick.
Teddy Maynor: (1999–2005, 2009–2014, 2016–2020) Teddy graduated from TC Roberson in 1981. He began his “career” as a volunteer for the Rams Club and the Athletic Department in 1999, even though he did not have a child who was participating in athletics at that time. He started as a mobile concessionaire during the time that TCR’s stadium concession stand was being built and before there was a concession stand for baseball and softball games. He added merchandise sales to his volunteer duties, greatly expanding the inventory of TCR merchandise. Teddy is credited with creating many new designs for sweatshirts, tee shirts, golf shirts, jackets and other means of publicizing and marketing TCR Athletics. TCR merchandise went from just a few items to a full-scale operation, creating striking items to wear to show off “Ram Pride” as well as generating significant revenue for the Rams Club. His out-going personality also lent itself to 50-50 raffle ticket sales during home football and basketball games. Teddy was a dedicated and tireless worker on behalf of the Rams Club and the TCR Athletic Department. He was frequently called upon to help out with odd jobs around the stadiums, the gymnasium, and some off-site events. He never said “no” which has been such a gift to TCR. After graduating from TCR, Teddy worked as a materials handler and machinist for Borg Warner and retired from there after 27 years. He then went to work as a production supervisor, materials specialist, and manager of off-site warehouses at Consolidated Metco. Teddy’s wife, Michelle, is the bookkeeper for TC Roberson. He has a daughter, Stacy, and two sons, TJ and Jacob, all of whom are TCR graduates. Teddy currently lives in South Asheville and is now the warehouse manager for Consolidated Metco.
Andy Morgan: (2004 – 2016) Andy coached football, indoor and outdoor track and field while at TC Roberson. At different times, Coach Morgan served as Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator for the Varsity Football teams during his time at Roberson. He served as Head Coach for both Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams, primarily for the women’s track and field teams. Coach Morgan also taught PE at Roberson. Along with four other PE educators, he helped to develop the curriculum for Buncombe County Public Schools first Honors PE program. He assisted with running the Buncombe County Special Olympics each year he was at Roberson and AC Reynolds. As the Defensive Coordinator, Coach Morgan led the Rams football defense to a #1 ranking in North Carolina by the Massey Ratings. That team set a school record for the fewest points allowed per game (6.2), while recording 6 shutouts in that season. As the Offensive Coordinator, the Ram football offense accomplished the top four yardage totals in school history. As the Head Coach for Women’s Track and Field, his teams were 11-time Conference Champions, 5-time 3-A West Regional Champions, and 6-time 4-A West Regional Champions. They were 2-time 3-A State Runner-up, 1-time 4-A State Runner-up, and finished in the top 10 at the state meet five times. His teams were 3-A State Champions in 2007 and 2009. His Indoor Track and Field teams were 3-time 3-A State Runner-up. Coach Morgan was selected as the MAC Conference Coach of the Year 11 times and was named WNC Coach of the Year 5 times. His teams have broken all but one of the schools’ women’s track and field records and had over 40 individual and relay team state champions. As an assistant to the boys track and field program, the boys teams were 2-time, 3-A State Champions. Coach Morgan has served on the board of the North Carolina Track and Field Coaches Association. Coach Morgan left TC Roberson in 2016 to become the Head Football Coach at McDowell High School. He left McDowell in 2019 to become Assistant Football Coach and Head Track and Field Coach at AC Reynolds. Andy is married to his wife, Colleen, who works for Southwest Airlines. They have two children, Hank, 14, and Pennley, 11, both of whom are athletes in football, basketball, track, soccer and softball.
Ivan Scott: (2000 – 2004) Ivan played JV and varsity football all four years he was at TC Roberson. In his senior year, he also ran both Indoor and Outdoor track, lettering in all three sports. In football, Ivan was All Conference his senior year and came one interception away from tying the school record. Ivan was All Conference in Indoor track his senior year and All Conference in Outdoor track in both his junior and senior years. In addition to football and track, Ivan played trumpet in the concert band for two years and sang in the Advanced Ensemble his junior and senior years. While in the Advanced Ensemble, Ivan frequently performed the National Anthem at many athletic events. In his senior year, Ivan received the Principal’s award and the Most Outstanding Athlete in an Individual Sport award. He was also voted as Homecoming King! In track, Ivan’s track teams were 3-time Buncombe County champions, 3-time Conference champions, 3-time 3-A Regional champions, and 3-time state 3-A Runner-ups. In the 400m dash, Ivan was Buncombe County champion, Conference champion, 3-A Regional champion, and 3-A State Champion. He is the current TC Roberson record holder in that event. In the 4 x 100m relay, his team were 2-time Buncombe County champions, 2-time Conference champions, 3-A Regional Runner-ups, and 3-A State Champions. That team still holds the school record for that event. Ivan’s 4 x 200m relay team were 3-time Buncombe County champions, 2-time Conference champions, and 3-A Regional champions, breaking the regional record for that event. That team still holds the school record for that event. His 4 x 400m relay team were 3-time Buncombe County champions, 3-time Conference champions, 3-A Regional champions, and 2-time 3-A State Runner-up. This team set a new school record at that time. Ivan is the only athlete in TCR history to have his name on 4 sprinting school records at the same time. Ivan is a senior provider data analyst with United Health Care and lives in Spotsylvania, VA with his wife Melissa and children Ivan, Jr., India, Isaiah, and Illianna.
