Scott Bradley: (1987-1991) Scott participated in basketball and track all four years that he attended TC Roberson. In track, Scott was a two-time all conference performer. He was a four-year starter on the varsity basketball team playing in over 90 consecutive games for the TCR varsity team. He was selected to the all-conference team three out of his four years. Twice, Scott was chosen as the conference Player of the Year. In his senior year, Scott led his team to a state runner-up finish, scoring 29 points in the state championship game, and was selected as the WNC Player of the Year. He was also chosen as a second team All-State player for his senior year. He was selected to play in the East-West All Star game. After graduating from Roberson, Scott was a scholarship player at Western Carolina University for four years. He currently works for Budweiser of Asheville.
Susan Bulloch Hartsell: (1968-1972) Susan participated and competed in gymnastics and track for all four years that she attended TC Robeson. She also competed in AAU gymnastics since high school gymnastics was limited at that time. She helped the Roberson gymnastics team become tops in Western North Carolina. She received several awards for her gymnastics accomplishments from the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club and the Sky Hy & Hy Hopes Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association for gymnastics. She received the outstanding senior award for her senior high class. Following her outstanding career at Roberson, Susan attended Western Carolina University where she led the Catamounts to four consecutive gymnastics championships. She was the individual state champion for three of those four years. She finished in the top 5 at the Southern Regional Championships and qualified for the National Championships all four years at WCU. She was chosen as the WCU female athlete of the year in 1976. In 1994, Susan was inducted into the Western Carolina Hall of Fame. After graduating from Western, Susan began her teaching and coaching career at Tuscola High School where she taught health and PE for 30 years. She coached a highly successful volleyball program at Tuscola for 27 years. Her teams won numerous conference championships and made 8 consecutive appearances in the state 4-A playoffs, finishing as state runner-up seven times and state champions in 1987. She also assisted with softball and track at Tuscola. In retirement, Susan works part-time at Haywood Fitness Center on the fitness floor and teaching gymnastics. She continues to be active in physical fitness.
Lowell Holland: (1983-1995) Lowell graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1962. Although employed in the flooring business, Lowell’s avocation and passion was working with youth – both in counseling and coaching. He started coaching youth football in Durham, NC in 1967. He resumed coaching his sons, Kyle and Eric, in football, basketball and baseball from 1978-1993. He helped secure the funding for and oversaw the construction of the South Buncombe baseball and softball fields built at Valley Springs Middle School. In 1997, the baseball field used by Valley Springs and the South Buncombe Youth League was named the “Lowell Holland Memorial Field.” Upon the construction of the new Koontz School, this field was moved to another location on the campus of Valley Springs. When his eldest son, Kyle, enrolled at Roberson in 1983, Lowell became one of the Rams biggest supporters. He also coached at Valley Springs when his youngest son, Eric played football and baseball there. He continued in the role of volunteer, doing whatever he could to help out the athletic programs, until his death in 1995. Lowell served as Rams Club President from 1992-1993. He did whatever was needed to enhance the athletic programs at TCR. He helped build a new field house in the stadium and helped in the construction of the current softball field. As Rams Club President, Lowell started the advertising sign program in the stadium. Following his death in 1995, the Rams Club named its annual scholarships in his memory – the TC Roberson Rams Club/Lowell Holland Memorial Scholarship – now awarded to four seniors each year.
Manson Lancaster: (1982-2008) During his career at TC Roberson, Coach Lancaster taught art and photography for 26 years. Prior to that, he taught art and photography at the Orthopedic School for six years. He served as the department head for the Fine Arts department at TCR for 20 years. He also coached boys and girls cross country (3 years), girls basketball (4 years), and boys golf (20 years) and girls golf (3 years). His boys golf teams won 8 conference championships, 4 regional championships and one state 3-A championship in 1989. His teams finished in the top ten at the state tournament six different years. Coach Lancaster started the girls’ golf program at TC Roberson in 1999. He was a two-time WNC Coach of the Year winner. Coach Lancaster has always been a supporter of all the athletic teams at TC Roberson. He has run the scoreboard for varsity basketball games for 20 years and continues to do so. He kept stats for the varsity football teams for 7 years. Using his artistic talents, Coach Lancaster has assisted with painting ram logos on the turf in the stadium as well as lettering for the gym floor. He has taken countless photos for various athletic events. He has driven the activity bus for numerous teams to their games. Since retiring from teaching and coaching at Roberson, Manson continues to serve as scoreboard operator for varsity basketball games and currently serves as the director of the Rams Club golf tournament. He lives in Hendersonville where he works for Lake Point Landing Retirement Community. He also serves as Head Usher for First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville.
Jacob Mullis: (1995-1999) Jake played football, basketball and baseball while at TC Roberson. Jake was a two-time all-conference performer in football where he played 8 different positions in his two years on the varsity. He played varsity basketball for two years receiving all-conference, all region, Citizen-Times all-WNC, Hendersonville Times-News all WNC honors. Jake was selected to play in the Blue-White All Star game his senior year. In basketball, Jake averaged 20 ppg, 6 rpg and 3.5 assists per game his senior year. Jake was a two-time all conference selection in baseball. He was also selected to the all-state team his senior year when he helped his team to an undefeated regular season, a regional championship and a state runner-up. Jake was also selected to the Citizen-Times and Times-News all WNC teams his senior year when he batted .425 with 7 home runs. He also achieved an 11-1 record with a 1.80 era as a pitcher. Following his senior year, Jake became the first recipient of the Juan Chesson Memorial scholarship award. Following high school, Jake attended UNC-Wilmington where he was a starting pitcher for all four years. Jake finished his career at UNCW as the all-time leader in games started by a pitcher, 2nd in career wins, 2nd in innings pitched, 2nd in career shutouts, and 3rd in career strikeouts. He also led his team to its first ever regional appearance and was the winning pitcher in the team’s first ever regional win. At UNCW, Jake was a multiple winner of the CAA Pitcher of the Week and was a member of the All Decade team. Following UNCW, Jake was drafted in the 15 th round by the Kansas City Royals where he played in their minor league system for 3 years. Jake lives in Dallas, TX where he works in real estate. Jake and his wife, Shea are active in the Big Brother, Big Sister and Big Family programs in Dallas.
Chris Narveson: (1996-2000) Chris played basketball and baseball while at TC Roberson. Chris played varsity basketball for three years and helped his team win conference and regional championships. His senior year team finished as state 3-A runner-ups. Chris was a four year varsity baseball player. His high school record as a pitcher was 24-4 as he finished his senior year 12-0 with a .67 era. In his senior year, Chris was selected as a 2 nd team High School All-American as well as the 2000 WNC Athlete of the Year. Chris was also selected as the NC Gatorade Player of the Year in 2000. Following graduation, Chris was selected in the 2nd round of the 2000 amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He received all-star honors in his first full season of play in the Midwest A League in 2001. He was again chosen as an All-Star in the 2003 high A class Florida League and was chosen to play in the all star Futures game in 2003. Chris was a member of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals team in 2006. After a brief stint with the Boston Red Sox, Chris has been a member of the Milwaukee Brewers since 2008. He currently has a career MLB record of 25-17. He also holds a career MLB batting average of .234. Chris currently lives in Wilmington, NC.
Tom Smith: (1976-2006) Coach Smith coached football (5 years) and baseball (30 years) while on the staff at TC Roberson. He also served as the department chair for the business department where he taught accounting and key-boarding. During his career at TCR, Coach Smith’s varsity baseball record was 478-178. His teams won 14 conference championships and made 18 appearances in state playoffs. His teams won 4 West Regional championships and state 3-A championships in 1983, 2000 and 2002. 192 of his former players went on to play baseball collegiately with many receiving All-American status. He has had former players playing for Jr College and NCAA national championships. 28 former players were drafted by professional baseball, including a 2nd rounder, two 1st rounders with one being the #10 overall selection. Coach Smith has been named the conference Coach of the Year, Region 8 Coach of the Year and the American Baseball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year. He has been inducted into the North Carolina Coaches Hall of Fame, the George Whitfield Eastern NC Baseball Hall of Fame and the AC Reynolds Athletic Hall of Fame. Following his retirement from teaching and coaching in 2007, Coach Smith served as a volunteer assistant at Western Carolina where he was able to watch his son Kenny play. Coach Smith became a volunteer assistant at UNC-Asheville in 2008, then a paid assistant in2009 and currently serves as the Head Baseball Coach at UNC-A.
David Testo: (1995-1999) David played varsity soccer all 4 years that he was at Roberson High School. He was selected to the all conference team 3 times and was conference Player of the Year in his senior year. During his high school career, the teams that David played on won conference championships all 4 years, were state runner-ups once and state semi-finalists once. In his senior year, David was the Gatorade NC State Player of the Year, the NC Soccer Coaches State Player of the Year, selected to the All-South team and was selected to the National Soccer Coaches All-American Team. He finished his high school career tied for 2nd in goals for a season, 3rd in career goals and 6th in career assists all-time at TC Roberson. After high school, David attended the University of South Carolina where he played soccer for two years. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina where he was selected to the All-ACC 2 nd team both years. David was a member of the UNC National Championship team in 2001. David began his professional career with the Richmond Kickers A-League team where he was named Rookie of the Year. He continued his professional career with the MLS Columbus Crew. That was followed by 2 years with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL. David finished his pro career with the USL Montreal Impact where he was team captain for 3 seasons. The Impact won the Division Championship in 2009 and David was selected as the season Most Valuable Player. He was also named as a 2nd team All- Star. David played professionally for 10 years before retiring after 200 games played. Also during his career, David played on 3 national teams as well as the US Olympic team. David continues to live in Montreal where he is practicing to become a motivational speaker.
