Joy Doner: (1994-1998) Joy played varsity soccer for all four years that she was at Roberson. She was all-conference for all four years and was the Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year. She was chosen as her team’s MVP twice. She earned all-region honors three times and all-state honors twice. Her teams were state runner-up twice. She was chosen to play in the State games twice and the East-West All-Star game her senior year. She earned the team MVP honor in her senior year. Her total of 94 career goals scored was the school record, until recently broken, and now ranks her 2nd all time. One of her most outstanding games was in the playoffs against Hickory when she scored all 6 of her teams goals in a 6-3 win. After graduation from Roberson, Joy attended UNC-Chapel Hill where she played A Club soccer for 3 years and then was a part of the UNC varsity team her senior year. She received her master’s degree in physical therapy and has been practicing in Charlotte, specializing in outpatient orthopedics. Her recent accomplishments include volunteering in South Africa as a physical therapist for three months in the pediatrics ward of an orthopedic specialty hospital, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and playing adult women’s soccer.
Dick Fox: (1979-2001) Dick graduated from Biltmore High School in 1960 where he was an all-area performer in basketball and baseball. After a stint in the US Air Force, Dick began a long career with the Norfolk Southern Railway, serving as a chief clerk in the Asheville office until his death in 2007. Dick was an avid Roberson fan – no matter what the sport. He served as the PA announcer for the football and basketball teams for nearly twenty years. He also served as Rams Club president and helped build the current field house in the stadium. Dick was also active in the TCR Youth programs in football, basketball and baseball from 1973-2001. He served as an umpire for the South Buncombe baseball league from 1995-2001. Dick loved all the kids on the Roberson sports teams but especially his sons, Chris and Kenan, in whom he instilled his love for sports and for Roberson High School.
Tommy Franklin: (1968-1972) Tom played football, basketball and baseball for the four years that he was at TC Roberson. He also ran track in his senior year. In football, Tom was selected to the all-conference team twice and chosen as captain and MVP of his team in his senior year. In baseball, Tom earned MVP honors once and was selected to the all- conference team three times. He received the TCR overall Sportsmanship award in his sophomore year. In both his junior and senior years, he was chosen as the overall Most Outstanding Athlete at Roberson. In his senior year, he received the Asheville Jaycees Sports Award and was chosen as the Outstanding Senior of his class. After graduating from Roberson, Tom was selected in the 5 th round of the MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins and played in the Florida East Coast League. In 1974, he signed with the Atlanta Braves organization and played in the Carolina League. He once hit three homeruns in a single game. While playing baseball, Tom attended Western Carolina University where he graduated, cum laude, in 1977 with a degree in Business and Information Technology. In his career, Tom has served as Chief Information Officer and Vice-President in manufacturing companies. Currently, he is a Project Executive with IBM and lives in Knoxville, TN. Tom has served his community as a youth baseball coach and Sunday School teacher. He has an active leadership role in a men’s training program called “The Fight for Manhood.”
Sarah-Vance Goodman: (1994-1998) Sarah-Vance played tennis for one year, ran track for four years and ran cross country for three years while at Roberson. While at Roberson, Sarah-Vance earned letters in four sports and was a 16-time state champion. She was a 4-time state champion in the 3200m in outdoor track, 1-time state champion in 3200m in indoor track, 2-time state champion in the 1600m in outdoor track, 1-time state champion in the 1600m in indoor track, 3-time state champion in the 3200m relay in outdoor track and 2-time state champion in cross country. She led her teams to one state cross country team championship and two state outdoor track team championships. She earned All-American status in all three running sports. In her sophomore year, she was the Foot Locker cross country Southeast champion and then finished 9 th in the national race. She competed in the National Scholastic track championships in her junior and senior years, finishing 3rd and 7th respectively. Her personal bests of 5:04 in the 1600m, 10:18 in the 3200m and 16:12 in the 5k cross country distance would place her among the best female high school runners of all time. Her all-time course record at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, perhaps the most “frequented” high school course in North Carolina, was just recently broken. She also still holds the school record in the 3200m in outdoor track. Following graduation from Roberson, Sarah-Vance attended Villanova University for two years and continued her running success. She was an NCAA Cross Country All- American, placing 12th in the national championship race – the top freshman finisher. In her sophomore year, she was an NCAA Indoor Track All-American placing 7th in the 5k race. Sarah-Vance transferred to UNC-Asheville where she graduated with a degree in literature. She lived and served as a missionary in Cochabamba, Bolivia for two years before entering seminary. Currently, Sarah-Vance lives in Dallas, TX and is working on a Master of Divinity at Perkins School of Theology and Southern Methodist University.
Danny Montgomery: (1979-1983) Danny played basketball and baseball for all four years that he was Roberson. He earned all-conference honors in both sports. He was selected to play in the Blue-White all-star game his senior year. In his senior year, he played on the 1983 state championship baseball team. After graduation, Danny continued his education and baseball career at UNC-Charlotte. He was drafted as a shortstop by the LA Dodgers and played in that position in the minor leagues until a knee injury curtailed his playing career in 1989. Danny became a coach in the Dodger organization until 1991 when he was hired by the Colorado Rockies organization as an area scout in the Carolinas. Danny was both an East Coast and a West Coast crosschecker with the Rockies until he was promoted to national crosschecker in 2002. He held that position until 2005 when he earned his current title of Assistant Director of Scouting/National Crosschecker. In this position, he works closely with the Vice- President of Scouting and is one of the key contributors and participants in the annual amateur free agent draft held in June. Even though he travels all across the country, Danny makes his home in Charlotte, NC.
Amy Price Peters: (1984-1988) Amy played volleyball, basketball and softball for all four years that she was at Roberson. In volleyball, Amy was all-conference twice and all WNC and team MVP her senior year. She also received numerous team awards as well as awards while participating in summer volleyball camps at the University of Tennessee. As a basketball player, Amy was a starter for all four years. She was chosen as her team’s captain and MVP in her senior season. In softball, Amy was also a four year varsity starter. Her teams won several conference championships and continued deep into state playoffs. She was selected as the Player of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference. Based on her stellar senior year, Amy was chosen as the Outstanding Female Team Athlete in her senior year. While at Roberson, Amy earned 12 varsity letters, maybe the only person to accomplish that feat in three different sports. Amy continued her education at Catawba College where she played volleyball and basketball and even ran in a few cross country meets. In volleyball, Amy was All-South Atlantic Conference three times and is in the top four in school history in digs and aces. She was selected as the SAC Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All American in her senior year. In basketball at Catawba, Amy helped her team to a SAC and District championship. She holds the single game shooting percentage record as she made all nine of her attempts in a game against Mars Hill. While at Catawba, Amy earned 9 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and cross country. After graduating from Catawba, Amy was a case worker for Head Start while serving as Women’s Golf coach at Western Carolina. Following that, Amy started her own business of delivering medicine, meals and groceries to senior citizens in the Hendersonville area. Currently, Amy lives in Legrange, GA where she is a substitute teacher in the public school system there and also teaches language arts in a private academy.
Rich Sizemore: (1968-1972 & 1978-2005) Rich played basketball for all four years at Roberson. He also played baseball for three years, football for one year and ran track for one year. In baseball, Rich was selected to the all-conference team once. In basketball, he was selected to the all-conference and all-county teams in his senior year as well as being selected to play in the Blue-White All star game. He earned the TCR overall Sportsmanship Award, chosen by the Roberson coaches, in both his junior and senior years. Rich continued his basketball career at Brevard College before transferring and graduating from Pfeiffer College. Rich began his career in education by serving as the Buncombe County Schools PE Coordinator. He came back to Roberson as a PE teacher and coach in 1978 and remained there until 2005. While at Roberson, Rich coached JV and middle school football, baseball, boys cross country, boys golf, boys and girls track, softball, varsity girls basketball and JV and varsity boys basketball. He also served as athletic director, PE department head and conference president. His various teams won 22 conference championships in softball, track, boys and girls basketball; 8 regional championships in track and girls and boys basketball; made 6 regional tournaments appearances in boys basketball and were state runner-up 5 times in girls track and boys basketball. He was chosen as the conference and WNC Coach of the Year several times as well as being chosen to coach in both the East-West all star game and the North Carolina – South Carolina all star game. One of the most unique honors that Rich earned is that he is the only person who was selected to play in the Blue-White all star basketball game and has been selected to coach both the boys and girls teams in his career. His overall record as a basketball coach was 448-196. Currently, Rich is an adjunct professor at A-B Tech in Asheville.
