Structure of the Industry

There is a lot of variety in marketing, but many entry-level positions can be put into two categories. You can learn more about the business implications in this article

Marketing companies (e.g., agencies)

"The marketing industry includes full-service marketing companies that offer various services and marketing companies that specialize in certain fields and media. Marketing companies may specialize in direct marketing, promotional marketing, or guerrilla marketing." (from the Vault Guide)

An example of this would be an ad agency doing work for a client, like Arnold Worldwide creating a Super Bowl ad for Jeep.

Marketing departments ("in-house" marketing)

"Companies also have marketing departments, which a small or large staff of marketing employees depending upon the size of the company. They work closely with staff members in sales, public relations, and product development. Team members create marketing campaigns and programs geared to the company’s target audience, including messages for Web and print advertisements and other media." (from the Vault Guide)

This is essentially when your "client" is the company you work for. An example of this would be Brand Marketing at E&J Gallo Winery

Industry Outlook

Marketing manager jobs are expected to grow about 8% between 2018 and 2028 (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Some of the fastest growing niches within marketing are related to web and social media tools. "Marketing and promotions managers who are digital savvy will have the best prospects for finding work."

Data analytics skills are also increasingly valuable as "many industries now use data and market research to better understand their customers’ wants and needs, and to learn more about consumer behavior."

In general, tech-savvy, innovative people will fare well in marketing because "one of the biggest challenges for marketing professionals is keeping up with technology trends." For Learning and implementing business intelligence tools, like software for spreadsheets, data mining, visual analytics, is critical. Learn more from the Vault Guide.
