Networking

Why networking matters

Networking is essential to getting your application picked from a sea of candidates. Making the right connections will help you learn about the industry, gain clarity on your career goals, and help you get ahead in the recruiting process. Often times, networking is the only way to find out about a position. Many people -- especially freshmen and sophomores -- find their internships through networking (See data collected from '21 & '22 CSOM grads below).

Even if you don't have personal connections, you can utilize valuable resources like the BC alumni network. Below are some resources to aid you in this seemingly daunting process. Check out our YouTube channel for additional information on these topics!

How to build your network

Beginning the networking process can seem daunting, especially when it seems like other students already have a myriad of connections. BC offers many resources to help you get started, like meeting alum on Eagle Exchange and meeting with the career advising team. When reaching out to an alum, you can use this script to ensure professional and effective communication. Here are some other useful tips when forming new connections:

Use LinkedIn!

LinkedIn is a great resource to showcase any additional experiences that you can't fit onto your resume. It's also a great tool to expand your network and find job listings. Here are some tips to make sure your LinkedIn is stellar.

Handshake

Handshake is the official platform BC utilizes to help its students find job and internship listings. Similar to Linkedin, the platform lets you create a profile and upload your resume. Here are some tips for getting started with Handshake, and 3 must-haves on your profile. Another cool feature Handshake offers is uploading your unofficial transcript, which can sometimes be required for a job or internship application. Don't know which company you want to apply to?
