Learning Intention:
We are learning to find a fraction of a quantity.
Success Criteria:
I can divide a quantity by the denominator.
I can use the numerator to find the final value of a fraction.
I can solve real-life problems by applying my understanding of fractions of a quantity.
Students work in pairs with a set of “fraction cards” showing real amounts (e.g. $9, 60 min, 30 cm, 12 kg, 750 mL). Each pair:
Divides each quantity by the denominator to find one par.
Multiply that part by the numerator.
Swaps cards with another pair to check each other’s workings.
Challenge students to apply their one-third knowledge to non-whole results, such as one-third of 100 mL or one-third of 25 min, showing calculations with decimals (e.g. 25 ÷ 3 ≈ 8.33 mL)
