WALT find and display equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages
I can use fraction walls to help find equivalence.
I can use a calculator to assist my calculations.
Before we jump into our activity, let’s take a few minutes to think and talk together.
We’ll begin with a class discussion:
👉 What do we already know about decimals, fractions, and percentages?
👉 Why do we think it’s helpful to be able to switch between them?
Let’s share our ideas — there are no wrong answers, and everyone’s thinking helps us learn more.
On the board, we’ll look at a table that shows how some common fractions, decimals, and percentages match up:
Fraction Decimal Percentage
1/2 0.5 50%
1/4 0.25 25%
3/4 0.75 75%
1/10 0.1 10%
We’ll explore this together and notice patterns. For example:
How do we go from a fraction to a decimal?
➤ We divide the top number by the bottom number.
How do we turn a decimal into a percentage?
➤ We multiply by 100!
Now, we’ll work through one example as a class.
We’ll talk through each step and make sure everyone understands the process.
We can ask questions, give suggestions, and learn from one another.
By thinking, talking, and solving together, we’ll be ready to use this knowledge in our own Think Boards. Let’s go team!
Before you use coloured paper, you need to plan your work.
In your workbook, draw a big rectangle and divide it into 4 clear sections:
Fraction – Write your chosen fraction (e.g., 3/5).
Decimal – Change the fraction into a decimal.
Percentage – Change the fraction into a percentage.
Visual Representation – Draw a picture to show the fraction (e.g., a pie chart, bar, or grid).
✔️ You will do this for at least 4 different fractions.
Use multiplication or division to check your answers.
Make sure your decimal and percentage are correct.
When you're done, swap books with a partner and check each other’s work carefully.
Once your draft is checked and correct, go to the back corner of the classroom and collect a piece of coloured A3 paper.
Now, neatly copy your Think Board onto the coloured paper.
Use neat handwriting
Use colours and creativity to make it clear and easy to read
Organise each section carefully
