This guide provides step-by-step directions for students and families to complete the Speaking, Listening, and Digital Forums (SLDF) Requirement (#7 for Semester 1, due January 8) using the LAUNCH Cycle design thinking framework.
To fulfill this SLDF requirement prior to the January 8 deadline, each student must:
Choose 1 SLDF.1 Component Letter: Select one lettered standard from SLDF.1.a through SLDF.1.i to verify with recorded evidence (e.g., SLDF.1.c Connecting Contributions, SLDF.1.f Challenging Ideas, or SLDF.1.h Analyzing Opinion Changes).
Choose 1 or 2 SLDF.4 Component Letters: Select one or two lettered standards from SLDF.4.a through SLDF.4.c to verify with recorded evidence (e.g., SLDF.4.a Expressing/Adapting Voice, SLDF.4.b Digital Identity & Future Goals, or SLDF.4.c Anonymity & Authenticity in Digital Forums).
Provide Verifiable Evidence: Submit a recorded audio/video discussion OR a digital forum permalink thread, paired with a completed SLDF Response Frame containing direct quotes, timestamps, and analytical commentary.
In-Class Studio Students: Participate in collaborative discussion circles during studio class time to record group exchanges, test ideas, provide peer feedback loops, and build evidence together.
Independent Study / Remote Students: Complete requirements from home by recording a digital video call (Zoom, Google Meet) with peers or family members, participating in assigned online discussion forums, OR visiting studio class periodically to join live discussion circles.
Watch Overview Videos: Watch teacher tutorial videos on SLDF requirements, response frames, and progress tracker updates.
Review Standard Options: Read the standard options for SLDF.1 (a–i) and SLDF.4 (a–c). Select 1 SLDF.1 letter and 1 or 2 SLDF.4 letters that match your discussion goals.
Examine Response Frames: Review the specific Response Frames for your chosen standards so you know what evidence (quotes, timestamps, commentary) you will need to collect.
Choose Your Platform: Will you record an in-class studio circle, record a digital video call from home, or contribute to an asynchronous digital discussion forum?
Select Your Topic: Review the SLDF Discussion Topic Options Guide below. Will you analyze an RML reading item, discuss a real-world issue, or transform a Writing/TOPIC project into a discussion?
Explore Bonuses: Can you earn a Combo Bonus by taking a Writing or Reading project into a group discussion to earn multi-domain credit?
Team Up: Identify your peer discussion partners or family collaborators.
Verify Evidence Criteria: Confirm that your discussion will generate clear evidence for your targeted SLDF.1 and SLDF.4 standards (e.g., moments of civil discourse, challenging ideas with evidence, or adapting tone).
Team Conference: Hold a brief check-in with your discussion group, family member, or Mr. Anderson to verify that your planned topic and format meet standard expectations.
Outline the Agenda: Draft 2–3 open-ended discussion questions or focal points to keep the conversation structured.
Document Your Plan: Record your discussion topic, target SLDF standards, group members, and planned format in your planning notes.
Link to Tracker: Hyperlink your discussion plan to the SLDF standard cell on your ELA Progress Tracker.
Conduct Discussion: Record your group discussion video/audio (or complete your posts in the digital forum).
Fill Out Response Frames: Complete the official SLDF Response Frame(s) for your chosen SLDF.1 and SLDF.4 standards, citing exact video timestamps, direct quotes from participants, and analytical commentary.
Link Prototype to Tracker: Hyperlink your discussion recording/forum link AND your completed Response Frame document (Prototype) into your ELA Progress Tracker cell.
Self-Assess: Watch your recording and review your written response frame. Did you accurately capture quotes, timestamps, and deep explanations of how the standard was met?
Gather Feedback: Share your recording and response frames with a peer or parent for feedback on clarity, tone, and thoroughness.
Revise & Conference: Polish your written commentary based on feedback, then conference with Mr. Anderson for final check-off before recording your launch video.
Record Launch Video: Create a short screen-recording (Self-Evaluation Video) pointing out timestamps in your discussion recording and explaining how your evidence proves mastery of your selected SLDF standards.
Submit Materials: Upload your Plan, Prototype Materials (recording link + completed response frames), and Launch Video to Google Classroom prior to the January 8 deadline.
Link & Publish: Ensure all three items are hyperlinked in your ELA Progress Tracker, then post your launch video and discussion highlights to the class stream for peer showcase.
