Ceramics

Ceramics 1

3-Dimensional (FVL1000) (Open to Grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year

Prerequisite: “C” or better in Design 1 or high school course equivalent or instructor approval

Description: An introductory course in 3-dimensional art focusing on the exploration and experimentation of clay. Students will be exposed to a variety of hand-building and some mixed media techniques with an emphasis on creating a visual image of an expressed thought or idea. Glazing techniques will be used to enhance and/or decorate kiln-fired pieces.

Art elements and design principles will be incorporated into each project with the goal of the course being to create an artist portfolio. This portfolio will represent the student’s growth in fundamental abilities and skills learned throughout the course. Portfolio will be modeled after the Advanced Placement portfolio requirements allowing students to organize and reflect on how they have incorporated the General Learner Outcomes in their various pieces. This portfolio will also be used as preparation for more advanced 3-d classes such as Ceramics 2, Ceramics 3, and Advanced Placement Art.

Ceramics 2

3-Dimensional (FVL2000) (Open to Grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year

Prerequisite: 1 year of high school ceramics or the equivalent, instructor approval.

Description: An intermediate course concentrating on further developing the student’s individual style and using clay as a means of self-expression. Students will be challenged to expand and experiment with the basic - skills they’ve mastered in Ceramics I as well as being introduced to various wheel-throwing techniques. Students will continue to incorporate the art elements and design principles in each new creation.

The goal of this class is to create a portfolio similar to that of the Advanced Placement portfolio requirements. Although submitting their portfolio to the National College Board is not a requirement, the pursuit of organizing a large body of completed art work will accomplish three functions: a) to provide a structure and focus for the students to base their pieces around, b) allow the student to pursue their individual style while developing a “voice” within an art piece, and c) to better prepare them for more advanced classes such as Ceramics 3 and/or Advanced Placement Art.

Ceramics 3

3-Dimensional (FVL3000) (Open to Grades 11-12) 1 Credit/Year

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Ceramics 2 or equivalent

Description: An advanced course designed after the AP Studio Art course without the AP College Board examination requirement. Refer to the AP course description outline for objectives and criteria.
