Description: A foundation course (prerequisite) for all upper level art courses. Design I will focus on the art elements (line, shape, form, value, color, space, texture) and the design principles (emphasis, balance, proportion, repetition & variation, contrast, movement & transition, rhythm, unity). Students with little or no formal background in art will have exposure to a variety of art materials, techniques, processes, and styles. Areas of study may include: drawing, color theory & application, basic ceramics. Students will exit the class with a portfolio of work that showcases the start of their artistic journey. This collection of artwork showcases their newly developed skills, pursuit of quality, and breadth of experience that can be used as evidence qualifying them for upper level classes.
2-Dimensional (FVQ1000) (Open to Grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Design 1 or high school course equivalent or instructor approval
Description: An introduction to drawing and painting processes, media, and techniques. Application and close examination of the elements of art and principles of design through the observation, development, production, and analysis of art & design. Introduction to numerous media & processes, may include: pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, oil pastel, watercolor, acrylics, oils, mixed media. Areas of study may include: observational drawing, landscape, perspective, and collage. Exposure to exemplary artists with introduction to realism, impressionism, expressionism, abstraction, surrealism, and other major art movements.
Further development of individual portfolio aligned with the Advanced Placement Studio Art Program portfolio requirements. This portfolio will begin to organize the best examples of newly developed skills in terms of quality and breadth of experience. Introduction to the aspect of a personal concentration or focus on a specific area of interest will also be emphasized.

Description: This is an introductory course offering students experiences in printmaking, specifically relief and stencil processes (may include monotype, woodblock or linoleum block, cut-stencil, photo-silkscreen, mixed media). Application and close examination of the elements of art and principles of design through the observation, development, production, and criticism of design in a variety of printmaking processes. Conceptual ideation exploring larger themes of identity & personal narrative, propaganda & social isues will be developed. Printmakers and prints of various cultures and periods will be discussed and analyzed.
Applied Arts (FVK2000) (open to grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Design 1 or high school equivalent or instructor approval
Course Description: Design is all around us and we interact with it even whether we realize it or not. This course highlights visual and conceptual design and provides students with experiences in solving advanced design problems involving 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and technological concepts and applications. Students are given experiences in specific applications of design concepts and principles in areas such as environmental design, interior design, industrial/product design, exhibit design, and visual/graphic design. Areas of study may include typography and image; form and function; purpose and principles, content and context. Personal and public themes, solutions, and purpose and how they are connected will be explored. Students will develop a portfolio of work modeled after the Advanced Placement portfolio requirements allowing students to plan, create, assess, and reflect on their design process and experiences.
3-Dimensional (FVL1000) (Open to Grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Design 1 or high school course equivalent or instructor approval
Description: An introductory course in 3-dimensional art focusing on the exploration and experimentation of clay. Students will be exposed to a variety of hand-building and some mixed media techniques with an emphasis on creating a visual image of an expressed thought or idea. Glazing techniques will be used to enhance and/or decorate kiln-fired pieces.
Art elements and design principles will be incorporated into each project with the goal of the course being to create an artist portfolio. This portfolio will represent the student’s growth in fundamental abilities and skills learned throughout the course. Portfolio will be modeled after the Advanced Placement portfolio requirements allowing students to organize and reflect on how they have incorporated the General Learner Outcomes in their various pieces. This portfolio will also be used as preparation for more advanced 3-d classes such as Ceramics 2, Ceramics 3, and Advanced Placement Art.

Prerequisite: 1 year of high school Drawing and Painting
Description: An intermediate course designed to expand skills, attitudes, and knowledge gained in Drawing and Painting 1. Continuing emphasis on technical development of observational and drawing skills with critical analysis of personal process and products. In-depth focus placed on developing habits that strengthen conceptual and compositional development and self-expression in a variety of modes with an expansion of mixed media processes.
Continuing development of individual portfolio aligned with the Advanced Placement Studio Art Program portfolio requirements. Students will begin to edit and organize their collections - identification and selection of exemplary work in two main areas, Quality and Breadth of Experience. Student will also begin the development of a third area - a series of works (Concentration) based on the personal exploration, investigation, or focus on a specific area of interest or theme.
Advanced Applied Arts (FVK3000) (open to grades 11-12) 1 Credit/Year
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Design 2 or high school equivalent or instructor approval
Course Description: Building off of the previous course work from Design 2, this next-level course will move from theoretical to actual. This course is intended to highlight visual and conceptual design and provides students with experiences in solving advanced design problems involving 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and technological concepts and applications in an actual experience beyond the classroom. Students are given experiences in specific applications of design concepts and principles in areas such as environmental design, interior design, industrial/product design, exhibit design, and visual/graphic design. Areas of study may include typography and image; form and function; purpose and principles, content and context. Students will develop a portfolio of work modeled after the Advanced Placement portfolio requirements allowing students to plan, create, assess, and reflect on their design process and
experiences.
Students will explore:
Design and develop an eCommerce website and infrastructure (Business/Art/Technology)
Design and develop their solo exhibition of their works (Environmental/Technology/Interior)
Work with an actual client to present marketing concepts implemented visually (connecting community with the classroom)
Teach a lesson to a small group/class.

Prerequisite: “C” or better in Printmaking 1 or high school course equivalent or instructor approval
Description: This is an intermediate course offering students opportunities to expand their printmaking experience and to pursue preferred modes of printmaking in depth - includes all previously covered relief and stencil processes. Refined application and close examination of the elements of art and principles of design continue to be a focus. Student will begin the development of a series of works (Concentration) based on the personal exploration, investigation, or focus on a specific area of interest or theme.
3-Dimensional (FVL2000) (Open to Grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year
Prerequisite: 1 year of high school ceramics or the equivalent, instructor approval.
Description: An intermediate course concentrating on further developing the student’s individual style and using clay as a means of self-expression. Students will be challenged to expand and experiment with the basic - skills they’ve mastered in Ceramics I as well as being introduced to various wheel-throwing techniques. Students will continue to incorporate the art elements and design principles in each new creation.
The goal of this class is to create a portfolio similar to that of the Advanced Placement portfolio requirements. Although submitting their portfolio to the National College Board is not a requirement, the pursuit of organizing a large body of completed art work will accomplish three functions: a) to provide a structure and focus for the students to base their pieces around, b) allow the student to pursue their individual style while developing a “voice” within an art piece, and c) to better prepare them for more advanced classes such as Ceramics 3 and/or Advanced Placement Art.

2-D and/or 3-D (FVD1000) (Open to Grades 10-12) 1 Credit/Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drawing & Painting 1 & 2 or Ceramics I & 2 or equivalent (2 years high school art), high degree of self-motivation, consent of instructor.
Description: A course designed for students to continue studies in the visual arts as an area of personal interest or to develop their talents to pursue art as a potential career. Students will analyze methods, techniques, philosophies and problems in the visual experimentation in a chosen mode of expression. Particular emphasis will be placed on self-directed problem solving and refinement of skills and techniques through research and experiences. Concentration on a specialized area of expression demonstrated by planning, executing, and completing original works of art will be focused on in addition to establishing experience for making independent, discriminating judgments about art created by self and others.
Repeatable for credit. Students may earn a maximum of two credits.

Fees: Students are responsible for the submission/examination cost of the AP portfolio (determined by the College Board), digital device to store images for online submission, and individual cost of unique art materials not normally provided through the class.
Prerequisite: Drawing and 2-D Design: Successful completion of Drawing and Painting 1 and 2 or equivalent, or Printmaking 1 and 2 or equivalent, and a personal interest in pursuing a degree/career in the visual arts, consent of instructor.
3-D PORTFOLIO: Successful completion of Ceramics 1 and 2 or equivalent, interest in pursuing a degree/career in the visual arts, consent of instructor.
Description: An advanced course designed for the serious art student planning to pursue a degree/career in the visual arts. Emphasis is on the development of QUALITY - technical excellence in concept, composition, and technical execution of original works of art; BREADTH of experience in a variety of media and process, and a personal CONCENTRATION on a particular problem, concept, or medium. Students are required to complete a portfolio of works to be reviewed by the College Board for (3) AP college credits.
