Career Exploration and Student Supports: Part of establishing a learning plan for all students, including identifying appropriate foundational courses (i.e., using competency-based learning) and information about jobs, determining student progression in a single pathway or along multiple pathways or sequences of learning, or making available in-class and online course offerings and work-based learning opportunities. Students should also have access to comprehensive counseling, individualized supports along their journey (including, but not limited to, for students who are part-time, face barriers to learning, need academic or cultural supports, transportation, child care, or financial aid), or opportunities through student leadership development organizations to achieve their individual goals and aspirations, through a variety of transitions, in an ever-changing workforce.
Essential Elements: CDE Guiding Policy Principles to Support Student-Centered K-14+ Pathways
To ensure that this element is being met, rubrics and self assessments have been created for the Perkins (pg. 3-4) and CTEIG (pg. 10) grants with the following basic criteria:
Student leadership development is embedded into all career pathway(s) through one of the six recognized CTSOs or through an alternative leadership strategy.
For Pathways with a CTSO:
All CTE pathway students actively participate in a CTSO
An official Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) has been chartered (or in application process) by the State Association.
A local CTSO work plan is developed annually and a copy is furnished to local administration.
All students enrolled in CTSO's are affiliated with the State Association.
For Pathways without a CTSO:
Leadership activities are embedded in the CTE curriculum.
Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO): The CDE recognizes six CTSOs. Watch the webinar and review the slides to learn more about CTSOs to support student learning in CTE:
