How are we able to offer such a great price?!
Brundage Mountain generously provides lift tickets, ski rentals and the ski hut for our students. Our instructors are passionate and highly trained volunteers from the community.
The additional operating expenses that AWeSOMe! must cover, include:
Insurance
A training budget for or all volunteer team of instructors and assistants
Maintaining and purchasing new adaptive equipment.
A paid seasonal staff member to coordinate activities.
General office expenses including our PO Box, phone, website, office and hut supplies and our membership to Move United, formerly Disabled Sports USA.
Essential Eligibility Criteria
AWeSOMe! is open to anyone needing adaptive equipment or 1:1 instruction due to a permanent physical or cognitive disability such that it would not be appropriate for them to participate in the Brundage Ski School. All students must be medically stable. We offer alpine (downhill) ski lessons using adaptive ski equipment as needed to achieve maximum independence and success. Snowboarding may also be an option for some students.
We work with people with a variety of disabilities including:
Visual Impairments - a person with complete or partial blindness
Developmental and Cognitive Disabilities - a person with a physical or mental impairment that affects his/her ability to process information and/or to coordinate and control his/her body.
Mobility Impairment - a person has the use of only one leg (three track skiing); or a person who uses a wheelchair or walks for short distances or periods of time (sit-down skiing).
AWeSOMe! has Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) for participation to ensure we are able to offer a safe and successful learning environment for our students and instructors. Lesson availability is also dependent on AWeSOMe! having available to meet the potential student’s needs the appropriately trained instructor(s) and the equipment necessary for a successful, safe lesson.
Our Essential Eligibility Criteria are listed below. Please read this form below prior to participating in a lesson.
Adaptive Wilderness Sports of McCall
Essential Eligibility Criteria
All guests are welcome and important to Adaptive Wilderness Sports of McCall (AWeSOMe!). Our goal is to provide a professional level of care and service that creates the best possible experience for each and every individual visiting our program. The Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) assists us in providing equal access and a nondiscrimination policy for our lesson program. The criteria summarize the basic level of function necessary for an individual to safely participate in a private adaptive ski or snowboard (SnowSports) lesson. For some individuals, the basic level of function can be achieved with additional assistance or other reasonable accommodation.
v The lesson participant should not present a safety risk to themselves or others.
The purpose of our EEC is to give our staff and our customers the information they need to make an accurate, objective assessment when deciding if an individual’s abilities are appropriate to participate in our lessons. The following Essential Eligibility Criteria lists the most basic functions necessary to allow for the safe participation in a private adaptive SnowSports lesson. Although the list is comprehensive, there may be situations and variables that do not appear below and there are many different situations (such as weather, crowds, snow conditions) that make it impossible to list every form in which inclusion may take place. AWeSOMe! reserves the right to determine additional criteria at any time.
Please read and sign that you understand and meet these program requirements:
The participant:
· has a permanent, disabling condition.
· Is able to effectively notify instructors of personal distress, injury, illness or the need for assistance, with the aid of a trained caregiver/companion if necessary.
· Is able to actively participate in a lesson and understand that he/she is engaging in the specific sport and lesson.
· Will be able to follow directions independently or with the assistance of a caregiver.
· Will have a parent and/or guardian and/or trained companion/caregiver who can provide supervision during non-lesson times, if necessary.
· Will have a parent and/or guardian and/or trained companion/caregiver who can provide supervision, if needed, to use the bathroom facilities during scheduled lesson times.
· Will have a parent and/or guardian or trained caregiver available to administer all necessary medications that are scheduled to be taken during lesson times.
· If medication needs to be administered in the event of a seizure and/or any other medical condition that requires immediate administration of medication, a parent/guardian or trained caregiver must accompany the individual on the lesson.
· Will be able to breathe independently without any assistance from medical devices and/or trained professionals.
· Is able to participate in the lesson without the use of an oxygen tank.
· Is able to wear properly fitting, industry standard, safety equipment including a helmet.
· Must properly fit into equipment.
· Personal equipment must be in good working condition and approved by an AWeSOMe! staff member.
Guidelines for personal companions during lessons:
· Typically a companion/caregiver is someone who knows the individual personally and has assisted in other experiences ranging from everyday living to travel and other sports. Within a lesson setting, companions can be an important part of the SnowSports experience; however, there are instances where a companion is actually detrimental to the safety and productive flow of a ski or snowboard lesson. The following is a list of reminders for companions when participating in a lesson with AWeSOMe!:
With regard to skiing or snowboarding activity, the instructor is the primary decision-maker for the student.
Companions that are not specially trained will be allowed to participate at the discretion of the instructor.
For their own safety and the safety of those surrounding them, companions must have adequate ski or snowboard skill level 6/intermediate or above. AWeSOMe! does not assess the skill level of companions and companions assume responsibility for their representation of skill level.
A companion is not a student in the lesson.
Participants, companions, and all accompanying persons agree to read and adhere to our COVID guidelines. A participant may have his/her companion/parent/legal guardian read the guidelines and be responsible for the participant following them.
Based on the unique nature of each participant, AWeSOMe! and its host sites may adopt appropriate policies and procedures in order to allow participation.
The nature of the environment in which our programs are held is remote. Individuals and families must be comfortable with being out of direct contact with medical personnel while engaging in lessons.
Any recommendation for equipment needs or wants will be considered based on the participants’ disability and safety. In the interest of safety, AWeSOMe! staff will suggest appropriate equipment for each participant based on their observations and assessment including assessment of information provided by the participant and/or the participant’s parent/legal guardian.
