About AWeSOMe!
Philosophy & Methodology
Commitment to enhancing quality of life, through high-caliber outdoor experiences, for individuals and families whose lives are affected by disability. Many participants in the AWeSOMe!'s program progress their skills to the point that they can enjoy activities, such as skiing and kayaking, with their family and friends, independently of the program. Outdoor recreation promotes physical activity and conditioning as well as emotional well being, positively impacting the overall health of participants.
Providing participants and volunteers opportunities to learn new skills, challenge themselves, and work together to enhance the health and self-confidence necessary to expand human potential.
Inclusiveness: Participation in AWeSOMe! activities is open to anyone with a disability interested in outdoor recreation, who wouldn’t fit into a traditional outdoor recreation class, and is medically stable. This includes individuals with a permanent physical or learning disability who needs adaptive equipment and/or one-on-one instruction. In addition, the program facilitates participation by students with disabilities in local school sponsored outdoor recreation activities.
A community service offering adaptive outdoor recreation to local children and adults with disabilities, regardless of ability to pay.
Integration: Our adaptive outdoor activities aim to teach lifetime leisure skills and prepare individuals to recreate as independently as possible. Adaptive outdoor recreation help put individuals with disabilities on par with their non-disabled counterparts, allowing side-by-side participation in a popular McCall outdoor pastimes.
Disability awareness: Integration of people with disabilities through recreation also helps educate the non-disabled population about people with disabilities and their capabilities, making it easier to weave them into the fabric of society in general. The volunteer experience enhances disability awareness and personal growth.
Advocacy: Working toward equal access to outdoor recreation for all regardless of disability.
Mission: to empower people of all abilities through high quality outdoor experiences.
The purpose of this organization is to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities through sports and recreational activities. Our vision is to continue to grow the program to be self-sustaining with sufficient volunteer staff and Board of Directors (BOD) to provide excellent recreational opportunities to participants at affordable prices with adequate funds to maintain a fleet of up-to-date adaptive equipment and support program operations.
