Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in August 2020, we welcomed students to our classrooms remotely. This proved difficult for students, teachers, and families alike as we all attempted to adjust to the new "normal" way of attending school. Technology by way of internet connections proved to be of great importance to our teaching and student learning and was found to be severely lacking. We quickly learned that some things were just out of our control and we all did the best we could under extreme circumstances.
While teaching to the Common Core State Standards we found that students needed more time to talk about COVID-19, their fears and uncertainties, as well as family strains caused by the virus. The fifth-grade team spent many hours planning lessons on self-awareness, self-management, and relationship skills. Ms. Kelly Kramer, our school counselor, also met with students (online) and focused on mindfulness, empathy, kindness, and gratitude. These lessons really helped students focus on ways to deal with their feelings and to learn ways to socialize in a remote capacity.
Yes, things were very different this year. We have all suffered the burden of the pandemic, the isolation from family and friends, sickness, and death. We are emerging from an experience like no other, stronger than before with our eyes wide open. While we don't know what the future will hold, we do know we will continue to love and support each and every child that filters through our classrooms.
Read our stories by clicking the collapsible tabs.
What is KINDNESS in our children's eyes? We have emphasized intentional kindness to be part of our students' everyday life at school. Although this year is pretty different from what we usually do, this doesn't stop us from believing that the power of kindness can empower our kids to become the best of who they are. This is one integral part of us in AVMS!
A 5th Grade
Culminating Project
“Breaking Up the Bakery” is an activity wherein students used their math skills with fractions to create recipes and structures for their mini bakery. This incorporated ELA writing and technology skills in creating menus and recipes as well as fabricating history and background using digital resources.
A small class of hybrid students worked with a banana pudding recipe in which they were required to convert all of the ingredients into quarter cups and then triple the servings, relying on their math skills to increase the ingredients and create the 'perfect' pudding. Each team's end results were taste-tested by Mrs. Camp who deemed both did a great job working as a team. One passed the taste test while the other made a mistake in the amount of an ingredient which caused the pudding to be extra sweet. All in all, we had a great time and they both tasted very good. Lesson learned: Double-check your math before making a scrumptious dish.

Their creativity and imagination took them to places and created stories they thought were too difficult for them to achieve
Our 5th graders were very creative in putting together pieces of their bakery project. They imagined and planned every detail, created their own menu, chose their special recipe, measured, converted, and tripled their ingredients, named their bakery, and wrote a story that gave life to their project. It was all worth it!

Aussie Vibe Bakery in Tucson
The Breadiful Cakes
Would you ever want to go to a place that serves delicious baked treats? When you do, it will make you hungry. This place loves to base their recipes on Australian treats, but like to add their own touch. This place is located in Tucson and was founded by a lovely lady in 1992. She was born in Australia, so her bakery is inspired with Australian culture.
The bakery was named The Breadiful Cakes and was founded in 1992 by Judith Rose. She was very kind and caring and she loved to bake sweet treats. She was born in 1940 and was 52 when she bought the bakery from a small family that were known as the Robinsons, who had the bakery as an old market all the way from 1920.
In The Breadiful Cakes, they bake quite a lot of things like neenish tarts, cakes, and coffee. One of their most famous recipes for cakes is carrot cake, because the town is quite fond of it, and Karla Rose actually owns her own carrot cake shop. The coffee is made from fresh coffee grounds and they offer the most delicious creamers. Their most liked neenish tart is chocolate with white icing. Carrot cake has been famous in the bakery for years. Judith Rose actually came up with the recipe herself.
They host special activities every two months. There was a month where they held a drawing contest. The drawing was about the bakery itself and its culture. Best drawings were selected and were recognized. Everyone got a prize though they didn't score top 3.
In all, the Breadiful Cakes of Judith Rose speaks about the beautiful person in her. The blend of Australian culture and Tucson makes the bakery stand out from the rest. The place will make you hungry and will have you lining up at the door waiting for a treat.

JAIDA's
Brazilian Kick
Jaida’s Jungle Jam
Have you ever tasted a weird but heavenly treat? I think you have, but not one like this. This treat started a while back in 1829. You can find this treat in Brazil where it is originally from.
In 1949, Anita Wilson opened a bakery in Brazil. It took her four years just to get the building done. She was very specific with the details. She spent a good amount of cash on the place. Now, I think you can imagine the excitement on her face when she was done. She mentioned that no matter what, no one could ruin this for her. She worked hard and did this in memory of her husband.
When her husband, Arnulfo Wilson died, she wanted his dream to come true. Anita had built a bakery just like the one he had imagined in his drawings. When the construction was completed, she took a leap of faith. At first, the business was slow and she made little money. She was so determined to make it a reality, so she decided to sell her house. She created a play place with the money. People got interested because the bakery looked different from others. This had attracted more people, and the bakery started to establish its name.
The bakery became famous in Brazil and eventually the world. It made it on the top list of favorite destinations in Brazil. The unique preparations and food setting added to the attraction, it will make one experience the vibe of the jungle. The food also has a nice Brazilian kick. The very first Brazilian treat made was a Brazilian doughnut or Bolinhos De Chuva. Now, we have numerous flavors to choose from. An array of sweet treats would surely satisfy sweet cravings. They make sure all the food is under forty dollars, so people can afford it.
Now, the unique adventure with food is managed by Jaida Wilson, the great-granddaughter of Anita and Arnulfo Wilson. She is now the sole owner of the original bakery. New additions were made including the gift shop. She hopes to open more branches and venture abroad.
No one can deny the heavenly feeling when you take a bite of the treats in this bakery. The rich history, unique food, and experiences are the things that make Jaida’s Jungle Jam a place to go in Brazil. With the new owner and new name, more surprises await.

Dorayaki and Monaka
Dorayaki serving=36
Ingredients:
24 eggs w/o shell
4 cups sugar
12 tbsp honey
8 cups plain flour
6 tsp baking powder
6-12 tbsp water
6 tsp flavored oil
6.6 LB red bean paste
Directions:
1) In a large bowl, combine eggs, sugar, and honey and whisk well until the mixture becomes fluffy.
2) Sift flour and baking powder into the bowl and mix all together. Keep in the fridge to rest for 15 minutes.
3) The batter should be slightly smoother now. Stir in 1 Tbsp of water. The water amount may vary depending on the size of eggs and how accurate your flour measurement is. The amount should be 1-2 Tbsp.
4) Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat (close to low). It's best to take your time and heat slowly. I keep the heat setting to the lowest for 5 minutes.
5) Dip a paper towel in vegetable oil and coat the bottom of the pan with the oil.
6) Then, remove the oil completely (that's the key for an evenly golden brown dorayaki surface).
7) With a ladle or a small measuring cup (I use a 4 Tbsp measuring cup), pour 3 Tbsp of the batter from 3" (8 cm) above the pan to create 3" (8 cm) diameter pancakes.
8) When you see the surface of the batter starting to bubble, flip over and cook the other side. With my stovetop and frying pan, it takes 1 minute and 15-30 seconds to cook one side and 20-30 seconds on the other side.
9) Transfer to a plate and cover up with a damp towel to prevent it from drying. You do not need to oil the pan again. Continue making pancakes.
Monaka servings=36
Ingredients:
72 crackers
6 small cans of canned boiled adzuki beans
6 large umeboshi
18 shiso leaves,
6 tbsp sugar,
6 grams powder kentan

1) Take the pit out of the umeboshi and mince the flesh.
2) Finely chop the shiso leaves.
3) Put the boiled adzuki beans, umeboshi and A ingredients (sugar, powdered kanten) in a saucepan and mix together.
4) Cook over low heat, stirring constantly.
5) Let cool, and the "Plum Shiso Bean Paste" is done.
6) Put in as many shiso leaves as you like.
Sandwich the filling between crackers and that's it. Garnish with more shiso leaves.

Writing brings us to places we can only imagine,
and shows us things we have not seen.
By Jadea
Have you ever seen an animal that can kill some beings with its punch? Because if you have, you would be amazed. This amazing animal is a carnivorous mammal, and they mostly eat large animals like deer, wild boar, elephant calves, and sometimes even people. This amazing animal originates from Africa. Around two million years ago, one outgrowth of Felidae had migrated east to go to Asia, and then those animals evolved into the orange, white, and black beasts we know and love today.
Tigers are furry yet fierce animals and they can live in mangrove swamps, grasslands, rainforests, and savannas. Sadly, 93% of documented lands of tigers have vanished mainly because of human activity. In order for tigers to survive, they need to live in places where it has dense vegetation, some access to water, and tigers have to have some hoofed mammals around for prey. There is no exact habitat for a tiger, but it depends on what species you're looking for, although tigers mainly live in forests.
A tiger has a strong body with muscular limbs, a big head, and a tail that is about half the size of the body. Its coat is thick and heavy, and color varies between orange and brown with white anterior areas and characteristic vertical black stripes that are special in discrete ways. In the front of the mouth, tigers have six sharp yet little fangs on the top and bottom jaw. These scary fangs are useful in many ways like biting through bones.
“The Save the Tiger Fund-Panthera Partnership” was originally two organizations. Their names were “The Save The Tiger Fund” and the other was called “Panthera” and a couple of years ago they joined forces to save the worlds of wild tigers. When the two forces combined they were hoping to be very influential so others would help tigers too. Since most tigers die of poaching and hunting, this organization mainly focuses on putting an end to these activities, by whatever legal means are available.
Remember if you see a tiger don't get too close because it might punch, and always make sure to make a good memory if you see a tiger. Tigers have orange, and brown with white anterior areas and characteristic vertical black stripes that are special in discrete ways, The Save The Tiger Fund-Panthera Partnership is hoping to put an end to tigers dying of poaching and hunting, tigers live in many places like in mangrove swamps, grasslands, rainforests, savanna’s, and about 93% of documented lands of tigers have disappeared mostly because of human activity. Tigers are amazing and they are the largest cat and the third-largest carnivorous animal on land.

Light Pollution
By James
Have you ever wondered why you are not able to see the stars at night? Yes, you probably have. We will be so sad if we cannot see the stars because they help us light up the sky. A Long time ago our ancient people enjoyed looking up at the stars at night. The light pollution from having too much light is affecting a lot of living things. We are going to be discussing light pollution, sources of light pollution, and the effects of this problem.
First, let us start with light pollution. Light pollution is a big problem because if we used too much light, like in cities, it is hard to see the stars at night. According to Norreen Grice in “Light Pollution, a Study Near you”, “If you live in the city there are lights everywhere, like businesses that operate at night, sports fields and billboards. Living in the city must be very hard for a lot of people. They should turn off some lights that they don't need to use. In addition to this, having too much light is hard for people to sleep at night. Some animals that look for their food at night are distracted by too many lights as well.
Next, there are a lot of sources of light pollution. According to Renee Bauer in “Sources of Light Pollution”, air pollution happens when harmful particles are released in the air. These particles can harm all living things. These can also make light pollution even worse. They make light scatter at night.” This tells us that we have to use less gas, and avoid using things that contribute to bad air to prevent air pollution.
Lastly, these problems can have very bad effects on all living things. Like when sea turtles hatch, they go to the hotel doors instead of going to the ocean. This is because they are attracted to the hotel lights as cited from an article, “The Light Pollution” by Catherine Clark Fox, it is mentioned that research shows lots of nighttime light can harm wildlife. We should be careful about using lots of lights, especially at night because other wildlife animals are awake to look for their food, and they will die if they don't have enough to eat.
In conclusion, having too much light can affect all the living things, and this is because of using too much light at night, and having cars using gas will cause bad air or air pollution. So that is why sometimes we ask ourselves if we ever wonder why we are not able to see the stars at night. Light pollution is a big problem for all living things that we need to solve, and to be aware of.
Cubing
by Aliyah
Have you ever wanted to impress your friends and family? Well, I'm sure you have! After all, doesn't everybody? This is a fun thing that is competitive and challenging. It will impress everyone around you. It isn't too well known, and not many people do it, it's quite fun.
First, cubing, unlike solving a 3x3 or better known as a Rubik's cube, refers to solving a whole bunch of twisty puzzles. Like pyraminx 2x2 4x4 5x5 6x6 skewb ivy cube windmill and more. Cubing comes in many different ways, speed solving, collecting, blind solving, one-handed solving, and more. Cubing can be competitive or non-competitive, or even just learning new algorithms and finger tricks.
Secondly, the original Rubik's cube was created in 1974 by a man of the name Erno Rubik. It took an entire month for him to solve it, he wasn't even sure it could be solved. The first cubing competition was in 1982 only about 2 years after cubing started getting popular in the 1980s. The best speedcuber is Feliks Zemdegs holding the world record for 4.22 seconds as of 2018.
Lastly, many people like cubing for many different reasons. Like how flexible it is. You can constantly get better and learn Algorithms. For example, the Ortega method on 2x2 Or CFOP on 3x3. Then you can time yourself and see how fast you are.
In conclusion, cubing is something you should look into. It's an amazing way to keep yourself busy. There are so many ways to do cubing, Cubing will impress everyone around you.
We Are All Red Inside
By Perla, Marisol, and Jadea
Have you ever witnessed racism and hate for almost no reason? Well, if you have, then you would probably know that it's not cool and it hurts. Racism is when someone either judges someone for their skin tone or for their culture. Black Lives Matter, Latino Lives Matter, and Asian Lives Matter are all important because everyone matters.
Firstly, BLM stands for Black lives matter. Alicia Garza was the one who started BLM. Alicia Garza started BLM because of police brutality. There is a lot of hate on black people because of the color of their skin for no reason, they are also getting killed. I think the people should stop. No person should be harmed because of their skin tone. Racism is not a good thing, but some people leave it alone like it’s nothing. This issue should be dealt with, it’s serious.
Secondly, LLM means Latino Lives Matter. LLM may not be official but It’s still not okay to judge Hispanic people or anybody by their color or culture. They get a lot of hate for their race. There are a lot of rumors or sayings going around that all Mexicans/Latinos are rapists and aren't good people but that's not true because everyone is different and everyone makes their own choices. It's not fair to hate or judge other people just because of color/race or culture because it's nicer and makes everyone happier if you treat everybody the way you want to be treated.
Finally, ALM stands for Asian Lives Matter, although ALM hasn't officially been decided, I’ve decided to use it and so should other people too because there are a lot of unfair words and actions that get said or done for almost no reason. One Asian woman whose name is publicly unknown about the age of 79 got attacked by a man and she didn't put up with him and fought back. I believe that more people should take after her, not by violence, but they shouldn't let themselves be pushed around and judged for their culture or race. The sad part is, that some Asian Americans are so scared they will get attacked that they sometimes won't leave their house for essential things.
Whether it’s Asian, black, or Latino lives, all of them matter because we are all human. We may not be the exact same, but we are in fact similar enough that we should be treated the same. Thing is, racism and hate on people who are a different race or culture can sometimes happen for almost no reason. Also, make sure to treat people how YOU want to be treated, anyway, we are all red inside.
The Puppeteer by Doree
Once, there was a time when looks mattered the most and when you weren’t that pretty, you had to be banished. If you haven’t heard of the puppeteer, then you have no idea what I’m about to tell you. Though you can listen to me and hear about the legend, or you can skip ahead to your destination and never know. But, since you decided to stay here then let me get to it.
The Puppeteer
There was once a girl with so much beauty that it seemed impossible to beat her at any beauty contest. Though, this beauty was just a cover up for the deep desire that filled her soul at the deepest end and her secret was soon to be revealed.
Time Skip
Mary Polcher, was the most beautiful girl in town, which of course came with it’s ups and downs. Right now, she was on her way to a meeting in the prince's garden for all women and men alike. As she entered the garden, she was splashed with a huge bucket of water. She screamed at the burn on her face, as the makeup withered away. Underneath was her true face, she had pitch-black hair with two big black marks under her eyes. She snapped her fingers to change her outfit to a white and black sweater with black shorts. Everyone was in shock as they watched her lift up her mask to her face and put it on. She was the one and only Puppeteer, and the people didn’t know that was the last they would see of the true Charlie Rogers.
The story of the Puppeteer comes in many shapes and sizes, though no one knows of the true story. All I know is what she is capable of, and that she can manipulate the looks of others. The reason she is called the
Puppeteer is because she can pull the white strings from her fingertips, which she uses to pull and manipulate her puppets, along with the lost souls she protects and guides to a happy future. Though you should remember that she can come out of anywhere, maybe in your dreams or deep in the forest, but maybe just maybe, she can be the one writing this story for all to see, but, that's just a theory…..or is it?
Now, you may be wondering who Charlie Rogers is and why she has something to do with the puppet. Well, when Charlie was a young girl, she loved to go to the same place for her birthday every time. Sadly, on her 10th birthday, she got in a car accident and did not survive, though a little promise went a long way. Charlie had a little puppet doll that her father gave her when he got back from a business trip. She made a promise that if she could take really good care of the puppet, that when she died she would live on as a spirit in a puppet outfit (similar to what the doll wore). So, when the accident happened it was time for the promise to be made, and that's why she was called the Puppeteer and why she looked like a puppet.
Goodnight and sweet dreams…... my puppets.
THE
END….or not...
Karate by Aliyah
It was my first time sparring. I was excited and nervous, it would be a whole new experience. My dad told me, "Hit first, don't get hit!". We arrived at the dojo and my heart was pounding like a drum. I saw someone from my school. It was comforting to know someone. What I originally didn't know was I would be going against her! "Bow to your partner... fighting stance...fight!" I throat punched her not knowing that it wasn't allowed! I felt like a deer in the headlights. She was luckily okay. I didn't get in trouble and I learned my lesson to never throw a throat punch in sparring. Remember to always explain the rules to someone who is new to something.

Reading Fluency Group Performance
This class is a mix of English Language Learners and our regular ones. Without hesitation, the kids accepted the challenge and worked with their group. Everyone was involved and excited to take turns in reading the part that was assigned to them. It was a big challenge for some of them, but they were able to pull everything together. They were very patient with each other and each performed their best.
We are so proud of every small win that our 5th graders achieve in the class. This calls for EAGLE BUCKS rewards!
We read a story entitled "Lunch Money" about a boy who sold comic books to earn money. They were inspired by the theme of the story which was about creativity, hard work, and perseverance. Kids were very excited to make their own version of it. We followed the steps as written in our book. Some students online wanted to do it on the next level and used animations instead. We were blown away by their skills!
It all started by believing that these kids are capable of great things!

EARTH DAY 2021
As our climate changes so do our students. This year's class discussions took place about garbage being dumped in our oceans, the glacier's melting, various non-profit groups helping to rebuild Earth, fires, and deforestation, space, moving to Mars, as well as many more wildly interesting conversations.
The ideas generated and discussed to make a difference were awe-inspiring. This group of 10 and 11-year old students are the generations to create positive change and we believe they will!
The 5th Grade State Reports
Indeed, we travel through writing! The pandemic did not stop us from exploring the beautiful places in the country. Let them take you to imagine every bits and pieces of each state featured here.
STEM Project - Creating a SPEC of a Tiny House
Students dove into this project enthusiastically! We watched videos and looked at multiple websites to find out why tiny houses have become such a fad. We viewed various floor plans and studied the square footage, comparing what we were making with our own homes.
Students applied their Math skills, using perimeter and area to calculate the sizes of the rooms, placement of the furniture, appliances, and everything else associated with the building of a house. After all of the calculations were done, the materials were put out and they began to build. We used popsicle sticks, craft sticks, cardstock, rulers, graph paper, construction paper, glue and glue guns, paint, and much more. Students were very creative in the design of their tiny houses, generating 3D furniture and appliances to make the house look more realistic.
