This has been a challenging year for all of us. We were able to start off the year, on line, with Art Packs available to students. These art packets helped immensely as they provided students with supplies to help them through each lesson. Each student received two paint brushes, a watercolor palate, several pencils, markers, and colored pencils, as well as an Art Journal and an Artist Notebook.
We began with the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. We practiced making lines without rulers; straight, squiggly, in all directions in our Artist Notebook. We had the mystery animal of the day. We practiced patterns, forms and shapes.
Students used their Artist Notebook to create their work. It made it easier to keep everything in one place.
We also explored Ancient Egyptian Art, creating sarcophagus, temples, scarab beetles, Obelisks, pyramids, and writing our names in hieroglyphs. We finished up the quarter with a virtual trip to several Egyptian museums and dig sites.
Student work was fantastic!
The change we had been waiting for finally happened. Some students were in person in the hybrid mode. They were in person twice a week in two groups; A and B. We didn't have as many days together, but, we were able to make t most of it. We began at the beginning, with learning about lines, space, colors, color blending, and balance.
Being in person meant that we were able to use soft pastels. They are wonderful for blending colors and highlighting. Students really embraced this medium and were able to create beautiful works of art. Our big project was making these beautiful cactus scenes.
Third Quarter, Art was on line. Again, we offered an Art Kit to students to use for our lessons. They contained the same supplies as the first group, however, we were limited to one paintbrush. This quarter, we were not online everyday as we were previously in the first quarter.
We studied different forms of art and artists. For our project, we did a digital art show. The students were provided with a template and were allowed to choose their backgrounds. They were also able to change up the colors of opening and closing pages. Students who participated were able to upload their art; be it digital, painting, drawing, sculpture or other. Each student designed their show, including elements such as plants, picture frames, and external elements into their show. They completely blew me away with their presentations!
4TH QUARTER
We're Back!
Many students returned to in person learning. We were on a hybrid schedule for a few weeks, attending classes twice a week with two groups per class. AND THEN, we were able to return to everyone being in the same class at the same time, five days a week! WHOO HOO!! It was the change we had all been waiting for!
This change gave us the ability to do much more. For the first time, we were able to use both acrylic and watercolor paints! We paint at least once a week. We have been able to explore new ways to paint. We created paintings using bubble wrap and Q-tips to create different textures in our work. They turned out marvelously!
We have used and compared oil pastels and soft (chalk) pastels. Some students preferred the oil pastels and some preferred the soft pastels. Some students mixed both during a period of free time.
We are also exploring using various types of clay. We will be creating a small sculpture using air dry clay. We will also be sculpting using other mediums.
I try to have one day as a free day where students are free to use whatever medium they want to create a work of art. Student behavior is an indicator of whether or not we are able to have a free day. I love free day because it allows my students to explore on their own.
During our remaining time, we will be studying various artists and their contribution to the art world. We will continue to paint once a week using either watercolor or acrylic paint. We will continue to explore various forms of art such as Mandalas, Zentangles, Symmetry and others.
