How can I be on track to apply to a 4-year college?

A-G Requirements

You will need to complete the following classes with a "C" or better in order to be eligible to apply to a four-year college. These classes are called the "A-G requirements":

  • A -- History/Social Science: 2 years
  • B -- English: 4 years
  • C -- Mathematics: 3 years (4 recommended for UC)
  • D -- Laboratory Science: 2 years (3 years recommended for UC)
  • E -- Language Other Than English: 2 years (3 years recommended for UC)
  • F -- Visual & Performing Arts: 1 year
  • G -- College Preparatory Elective: 1 year

By completing the A-G requirements, you will be eligible to apply to California State Universities, Universities of California, and other 4 year colleges.

The minimum GPA for UC schools is 3.0.

The minimum GPA for CSUs is 2.0.

How can I do grade improvement and/or make up missing credits as a Junior or a Senior?

1. What happens if I earn a "D" or an "F" in a class?

You have several options to complete grade improvement (for "D" letter grades) and credit retrieval (for "F" letter grades):

      1. Saturday Supplemental with Ms. Hinton and Ms. Cayetano
      2. Senior Supplemental Instruction (SSI): Packet work that you will complete at home and then bring to your SSI teacher for grading and to take an exam to earn credits or complete grade improvement.
      3. APEX: This is a 7th period class where you complete work online, but if you have a computer and internet, you may complete the online work from home.
      4. Summer School: You may retake up to 10 credits of a class(es)

2. Where can I receive support to help me determine whether I should apply to a community college or a four-year university? And can I receive help with my applications?

If you're interested in learning more about community college, please see Mr. Haggard and Mr. Cincis. Both of them are both Antelope Valley College Bridge Counselors and their role is to help students understand the differences between a two-year community college and a four-year university. They'll help you with everything you need to do to apply and register at Antelope Valley College!

They offer daily one-on-one support as well as regular workshops on Saturdays to help students and parents learn more about college and everything that comes with it!
