Upper Respiratory Infection

Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) Basics:

Just like humans, cats can catch colds! However, "kitty colds" or Upper Respiratory Infections are only contagious to other cats. Often the symptoms are very mild, but they can become very serious if left untreated.

What causes Upper Respiratory Infections?

Most URIs are caused by a few different viruses, although bacterial infections can also cause URI symptoms. Because viruses can travel easily among cats who are in close proximity to each other, URIs are very common in cats living in a shelter environment. Kittens under 8 weeks have weaker immune systems, so they are even more susceptible to URIs and other contagious illnesses.

What are the symptoms of Upper Respiratory Infections?

  • Coughing or wheezing

  • Sneezing

  • Discharge or crust on nose or eyes

  • Mouth breathing

  • Lethargy

  • Loss of appetite

How do you treat an Upper Respiratory Infection?

At APA!, we treat URIs primarily with a course of antibiotics. Depending on the severity of the URI and the specific symptoms your foster cat/kitten is experiencing, we may also prescribe eye drops, nose drops, nebulizer treatments, appetite stimulants, and/or subcutaneous fluid or antibiotic injections.

PLEASE let us know immediately if you notice any of these symptoms in the animal(s) you are fostering!
