Volunteer Opportunities
Help is ALWAYS needed!
From hands-on kitten care at the nursery to remote data entry or social media assistance, there are a huge variety of ways to help out APA!'s Neonatal Program! Check out our current list of volunteer opportunities below!
Volunteer Roles- No foster experience required:
Kitty Catpool Driver
Combine your love of kitten life-saving and road trips! The Neonatal Program needs volunteers to transport kittens and life-saving meds to their foster homes. We are also looking for volunteers who can make appointment runs to the clinic with the foster kittens. We need weekend, weekday, and last minute transporters for kittens. A valid driver’s license and your own means of transport are required.
Commitment: Monthly commitment of 1-2 hours
Location: Various - transport between APA locations (Town Lake & Tarrytown) and driver’s assigned area(s)
Interested? Please contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org and include what geographic area(s) you would be able to serve.
Supply Hub Volunteer
The Neonatal Foster Team is looking for volunteers to serve as supply hubs for fosters. Supply hubs will keep a limited inventory of essential supplies on hand, provided by the nursery, to help fosters avoid extra trips to the nursery and to help fosters outside of nursery hours. We need hubs all around Austin, but especially in North and South Austin.
Commitment: Requires a weekly commitment of 1-2 hours (flexible; availability to hand off supplies to fosters as needed)
Location: Offsite/remote
Interested? Please contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org and include what geographic area(s) you would be able to serve.
Decon Squad
Do you love cleaning? Would you like to use your cleaning skills to save some tiny lives? Because kittens are so fragile, our fosters are required to fully decontaminate their kitten space between litters - and sometimes they need help! We’re looking for volunteers to join the Decon Squad and help fosters clean and sanitize their kitten supplies and space, so they can open their homes ASAP to new kittens. No animal experience is necessary for this role - just a positive attitude and commitment to following APA’s sanitation protocols!
Commitment: Requires a monthly commitment of 3-4 hours
Location: Offsite/Remote Position; travel to foster homes as needed
Interested? Contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org and include what geographic area(s) you would be able to serve.
Virtual Welcome Crew
Would you like to save kittens but can’t foster right now? Help us welcome new folks and get them ready to bring home some floofs!
Fostering is one of the best ways to save kittens, so you’ll play a critical role in rescuing them. Without your help, we won’t have enough fosters - which means we can’t save these tiny lives! You’ll be part of our incredible Welcome Crew, responding to folks who are interested in joining our foster team and letting them know what to do next. All you need is a computer and internet access - just sign up for the weekly schedule that works best for you!
Commitment: Requires a weekly commitment of 1-3 hours
Location: Offsite/Remote Position
Interested? Please contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org
Social Media Volunteer
Volunteer some of your social media time to help save tiny lives!
Whether you like posting and commenting, getting creative with videos, developing a monthly series, or anything else on social, the Neonatal Kitten Program needs your help. We want to build, connect, and support our lifesaving community, and we just can’t do it consistently or well without you! You can help anywhere and anytime (poolside, perhaps?). Just let us know the weekly (or monthly) days and times that work best for you!
Commitment: Requires a commitment of 1-3 hours weekly or 3-6 hours monthly
Location: Offsite/Remote Position
Interested? Contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org
Volunteer Roles - Foster experience required:
Kitten Concierge
Are you an experienced neonatal foster or volunteer who would love to share your experience and passion for kittens with other fosters, hands-on? The Neonatal Foster Team is looking for volunteers to help give fosters refresher training on feeding, administering oral medications, setting up habitats, administering subcutaneous medications, and more at the foster’s home. We will provide specific training, but preference will be given to fosters with hands-on experience. Access to transportation is required.
Commitment: Weekly commitment of 1-2 hours
Location: Offsite / remote - may require in-person visits to fosters’ homes
Interested? Please contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org and include 2-3 sentences why you would be a good fit for this position and what geographic area(s) you would be able to serve.
Virtual Trainer
Are you passionate about saving neonatal kittens and would you like to share your expertise with the next generation of neonatal fosters? Come help the Neonatal Foster Program train fosters how to feed their kittens using proper protocols and techniques through a video call. Experience with our Neonatal Program is a must, either through fostering at least two litters for the Neonatal Program at APA! or volunteering as a feeder at the APA! nursery. Virtual trainers must have a reliable internet connection and a reliable, working device to conduct video calls with fosters over Zoom, Google Meet, and FaceTime.
Commitment: Requires a weekly commitment of at least 1-2 hours, generally from early to late evening.
Location: Offsite/remote
Interested? Please contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org
Overnight Rotation Foster
Are you a trained Neonatal Foster, but don’t have time for typical foster placements? If you travel often, have a busy work schedule, or you just want to help out with emergency placements, joining our overnight rotation could be a great fit for you!
Participants are able to sign up for any night(s) of the week that they are generally available to help with emergencies, and can sign up either as a primary foster (if you have nearly-guaranteed availability) or as an alternate (if you may or may not be available, but don’t mind us texting you to ask).
Overnight fosters are only committing to one night by accepting a placement, although we may occasionally ask for additional nights if the foster indicates that they are open to it. Experienced neonatal fosters are preferred for this position, due to the fragile nature of the majority of kittens needing emergency placements.
Commitment: Requires a weekly commitment of at least one overnight foster shift
Location: Offsite/remote
Interested? Please contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org
Foster Data Entry
Are you detail-oriented and interested in gaining insight into the record-keeping side of rescue work? The Neonatal Foster Program is looking for data entry volunteers to help log data relating to the day’s foster movements in ShelterLuv and Google Sheets.
This position requires access to a computer and an internet connection. Experience with ShelterLuv in particular is a plus!
Commitment: Requires a weekly commitment of 1-2 hours on Friday evenings, with opportunities to fill in for other team members on other evenings.
Location: Offsite/Remote Position
Interested? Contact neonatalfostering@austinpetsalive.org
Don't Forget!
All volunteers must go through general APA! volunteer orientation and onboarding before training with a specific program. If you are not a current APA! volunteer and would like to get the ball rolling, you can read about volunteering at APA! and can fill out the volunteer application here.
