Panleuk Protocol
Medication Administration Video:
Subcutaneous (“sub-q”) medications (injections given just under the skin):
Lactated Ringers Solution (also known as LRS, or “fluids”)
Administration: 3 times a day, for 5 days
Purpose: Provides hydration and electrolyte replenishment; can also be used to dilute other subQ medications that cannot be given on their own
Notes: Usually given in quite a large volume, which creates a “fluid bubble" underneath the skin. Other subQ medications can then be injected directly into the fluid bubble, which helps to dilute them. The bubble usually disappears over time as the body absorbs the fluids.
Storage requirements: Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
NOTE: Since panleuk fosters use so much LRS, they are generally given a full bag of fluids (see left image) to draw from, rather than pre-dosed syringes.
Baytril
Administration: Once a day, for 5 days
Purpose: A strong, broad-spectrum antibiotic given to treat secondary bacterial infections
Notes: MUST ALWAYS BE GIVEN WITH LRS. Can be injected directly into the fluid bubble created by the LRS, or can be pre-mixed into the syringe of LRS.
Storage requirements: Light-sensitive; store at room temperature, wrapped in paper towels or stored in paper bag to block out light.
Polyflex
Administration: Twice a day, for 5 days
Purpose: A broad-spectrum antibiotic given to treat secondary bacterial infections
Notes: Shake well before administering; it clumps easily and can clog the needle! Given with LRS, and can either be injected directly into the fluid bubble or pre-mixed into the syringe of LRS.
Storage requirements: Refrigerate.
Reglan
Administration: Twice a day, for 5 days
Purpose: Stimulates the appetite, and treats nausea and vomiting
Notes: Given with LRS, and can either be injected directly into the fluid bubble or pre-mixed into the syringe of LRS.
Storage requirements: Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
Odansetron
Administration: Twice a day, for 3 days
Purpose: Treats nausea and vomiting
Notes: Given with LRS, and can either be injected directly into the fluid bubble or pre-mixed into the syringe of LRS.
Storage requirements: Light-sensitive; store at room temperature, wrapped in paper towels or stored in paper bag to block out light.
Cerenia
Administration: Once a day, for 5 days
Purpose: Treats nausea and vomiting
Notes: Cerenia is given with LRS, but MUST NOT be pre-mixed with the LRS; it needs to be injected directly into the fluid bubble. Cerenia can sting the kitten when administered, so we recommend giving it last after all other subQ medications.
Storage requirements: Light-sensitive AND must be refrigerated; keep in fridge either wrapped in paper towels or stored in paper bag to block out light.
Oral Medications
Panacur
Administration: Once a day, for 3 days
Purpose: A broad-spectrum parasiticide used to treat intestinal worms.
Storage requirements: Store at room temperature.
Toltrazuril
Administration: Once a day, for 3 days
Purpose: A dewormer that treats certain parasites
Storage requirements: Light-sensitive; store at room temperature, wrapped in paper towels or stored in paper bag to block out light.
