STEM-ESS Team

STEM-ESS Team Membership Expectations

At least eight and up to ten faculty/staff members will make-up your Core STEM team. Core team representatives will include STEM Faculty from departments in your STEM areas in scope, CTE Faculty, Non-STEM Faculty, Institutional Administrators, Staff (e.g. Student support staff, Institutional Research, Grant Writers), and STEM student(s) as itemized in the list below. It will be important to identify the team lead who will maintain momentum, institutional sponsorship and represent the institution at the regional Hub meetings. Extended team representatives include external partners and other internal faculty, staff, and administrators who are potential influencers, sponsors of the work, and/or could play a role as the effort expands at the HSI/eHSI beyond the initial scope. Communication with extended team members is recommended early on, and depending on their roles, their direct participation in the effort may occur closer to the start of work-based experiences, undergraduate research experiences, or outreach activities.

Core team members are expected to complete the STEM-ESS assessment. The core team will also have primary responsibility for STEM-ESS data interpretation and planning during a facilitated session. The extended team members may be invited to optionally complete the STEM-ESS assessment and provide inputs to the STEM-ESS plan that the core team shares with them.

Desired characteristics of all STEM Team members include: Committed to constructive transformational change, action orientated, experienced in serving Latinx students in STEM but not to the exclusion of others, willing to try new approaches, positioned in a role at their institution that enables them to act directly, transmit resources, and advocate for and on behalf of students within their organization, student body, and across other departments and institutions. Team members should have insider and historical knowledge about their local context, culture, and community.
