STEM-ESS

Evidence-based Student Serving Science Technology Engineering & Math

Overview

To support institutions working to accelerate Latino student success in STEM, Excelencia in Education (Excelencia) and the Center for Broadening Participation in STEM at Arizona State University designed and implemented the STEM Evidence-based Student Serving (STEM-ESS) framework. The STEM-ESS framework integrates the SFAz’s KickStarter (KS) STEM Assessment and processes with Excelencia in Education’s Seal of Excelencia (Seal) data, practices and leadership components, the four key practices found by Gomez in 4-yr HSIs with equitable outcomes for Hispanic students in STEM, and the National Academy of Science and Medicine’s Indicators for Monitoring Undergraduate STEM Education. The STEM-ESS framework is targeted to any institution of higher learning (IHL) that wishes to accelerate success of Latino students in STEM.

Components of the STEM-ESS Framework

A 3 x 5 matrix that provides strategies, capabilities, and evidence-based practices to improve Latino success in undergraduate STEM.

Five to fifteen cross-disciplinary IHL team members who are open-minded to change, well-connected, and perceived as role models and leaders.

Based on the STEM-ESS Model, a tool used by the STEM-ESS team to self-assess. Next, a comprehensive data analysis and current situation report is generated by SFAz.

The strategic vision, prioritized goals, objectives, and work plans developed by the STEM-ESS team, after discussion and interpretation of the STEM-ESS Assessment.

Priorities for intervention projects identified in the STEM-ESS Plan need to be further developed into actionable pursuits. Possibilities include 1) funding proposal development and 2) adoption/ adaptation of evidence-based practices that have been successfully demonstrated at other IHLs.

Facilitating and sustaining change via intervention project start-up and implementation, ongoing data assessment for STEM-ESS and its continuous improvement, sustaining change, and growing leadership and Hispanic Serving Identity.

A two-day hands-on annual workshop in partnership with Excelencia in Education where five core STEM-ESS Team members interpret the STEM-ESS Assessment data and develop a STEM-ESS Plan.

Fee-for-services consulting to provide intensive technical assistance to an institution to assess, plan, develop, and implement STEM-ESS.
