Before reading items below, please first review the Curriculum page of this site first so that you understand how to use the check sheet, Master List of Classes, how to submit a course petition, and where to find these materials in the future.

Courses to Take in First Year

You should take at least one more class in your first semester. Talk with the graduate advisor or with your faculty advisor about options. Aside from SOS 510 and 520, classes can be taken in any order, except for SOS 799: Dissertation (which can only be taken after you advance to candidacy).

Although students can take SOS 792: Research credits at any time, it's wise to save some Research credits for prep time for the written and oral exams. Students can take more than 12-credits of Research but cannot start taking Dissertation credits before candidacy, even if they already have the required 12-credits of SOS 792: Research for the degree.

Planning Ahead

Your Graduate Support Coordinator will hold advising meetings  in mid-fall for new students. In the meeting(s), we will cover coursework, milestones, procedures, plan of study (iPOS), and any questions you have.

If you want to talk through your program of study so you can plan ahead, please contact your grad coordinator (Lindsey Plait Jones) by emailing SOSGradAdvising@asu.edu or by scheduling an appointment.

Finding Classes

In addition to the core courses for this program, you'll need to identify additional foundation credits, workshop course(s), and electives. The best way to do this is to search the Master List of Classes.

The Master List contains classes that SOS students have taken in past semesters to fulfill all requirements. See which semesters classes have been offered in recent years (Columns A-K), who teaches each class most often (Column O), and what requirement each class can fulfill (Column S).

You can also search for classes using ASU's Class Search.

If you want to take a class that's not included in the Master List, just contact your grad coordinator to discuss whether a petition is needed.
