Background and Motivations
As the COVID-19 pandemic receded, University leadership created a committee led by Dr. Davros, Dean of the College of Technology and Humanities, to investigate the opportunities for improvement with online learning identified by students, such as an increase in instructor presence. Among the committee’s findings, it was determined that intentional use of video focused on supporting student success led to better student performance, better outcomes, and better learning experience. This finding is supported by Garrison’s research on the Community of Inquiry Framework (2000). As such, University leadership determined that a feasible first step to improve online learning was to boost instructor presence in online courses. To achieve this goal, the Faculty Video Introductions Pilot Program was created to help faculty develop the fundamental skills needed to create their own video introductions.
