Abstract

The Dynametrics team seeks to design a surgical light for low-resource areas. Inadequate surgical lighting has caused a significant decrease in surgical safety in such settings. Recent studies have shown that 32% of surgeries have either been delayed or cancelled completely due to bad lighting. Case studies reported that the inadequate electronic infrastructure of low-resource countries cannot accommodate current surgical lighting set-ups. The Dynametrics team is dedicated to developing and distributing an affordable, high-quality, and portable surgical light, project Dynamo, to provide an effective solution to this significant surgical safety issue. The team will build a surgical lighting system that is robust, portable, ergonomic, affordable, and independent of the electrical grid. The Dynamo device will be robust because it will be comparable to current surgical lights with light intensity of over 80,000 Lux. Dynamo will be portable in that it can be easily moved from one operating room to another. This will be done by making Dynamo’s base able to be attached to operating room tables as well as making its weight less than 5 kilograms. It will be fully ergonomic in that its position can be adjusted with only one hand. Dynamo will be low-priced in order for it to be economically viable, and it will be powered by a battery and be compatible with 12 V car batteries so that it is independent of an electrical infrastructure.
