Abstract

More than 3 million people in the United States alone have some type of dental implant and that number continues to rise. These individuals are often confused over what types of products to use in order to clean their implants. Furthermore, if one opts for professional implant cleaning, it costs approximately $1000 to $3000 per tooth. This leads to individuals turning to alternative solutions such as interdental picks, precision floss, and go-between cleaners. However there are two primary drawbacks to these products. It takes a combination of these to sufficiently clean the implants and can be confusing to many consumers, second, they scratch the titanium surface of the implant and can cause bacteria to grow in the abrasions. As a byproduct of this, bacteria could end up growing in the abased surface. Due to high bacteria growth, the implant begins to suffer from peri-implantitis which results in the decay of the gum and the bone around the implant. As a consequence, further bone grafting would be needed to replace the bone so that the implant stays in place. The Oralast team is aiming to develop a tooth implant cleaning device according to best practices that will target this problem. This wellness device will be sold directly to consumers and dental practices who require simple, affordable, and effective cleaning for their dental implants without the risk of scratching the titanium surface. The device will be made to improve the patients oral hygiene and peace of mind by providing them with a single system which they can easily incorporate into their everyday routine. The target specifications will ensure the final product accurately eliminates bacteria and reduces the amount of scratches on the surface of the implant thereby preventing peri-implantitis.
