Abstract
Between 5-10% of deaths for Type I diabetic patients are directly caused by severe hypoglycemic events annually. Severe hypoglycemic events can cause disorientation, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and potentially comas, all of which make it more challenging to self-administer current treatment options. Current treatments, such as glucose tablets and glucagon emergency kits, require concerted user input to function correctly, increasing the number of adverse events that can be caused by hypoglycemia. GRIPP is a closed-loop, automatic glucagon dispersal system that works in tandem with your continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to administer glucagon when the system detects severe hypoglycemic episodes. The device monitors changes in rate of blood glucose of the user to give warning of potential hypoglycemic episodes and dispenses glucagon if the user starts to move into a severely hypoglycemic state. GRIPP currently integrates with the Dexcom G6 CGM to parse blood glucose data and administer glucagon to the user when needed.
