Dear Students,

Well, this is different! How are you feeling?? Are you nervous? Excited? Sad? Hungry? I’m sure you’re feeling a lot of different emotions at the moment which is totally understandable. This is an unusual situation, but we’re going to make the best of it.

I have put this letter next to the one for your parents so you can also read it. You need to know that your parents and I are working closely together to make sure you continue learning all the wonderful things you would be learning at school. It will be up to you and your parents what your learning at home looks like, whether you do everything by yourself and ask them for help when you need it, or if you would prefer them sit with you while you complete tasks. You have to find something that works for you and your family. Remember, I expect mistakes! If you send something to me and it’s PERFECT I will think to myself, ‘hmmm did they do this by themselves? Or did their parents do it for them?’ Be honest! I want to see your work, not mom or dads.

You should be online at 8:30 am and 1pm Monday through Friday to get ready for learning. This is when I will be posting all the tasks and activities for the day. I have asked your parents to make a ‘timetable’ with you so you know when you will be working on school work during the day. Make sure this is something you can stick to! Let your parents know when you need a break. Your timetable should include things like running outside, eating, making things and ‘creative time’. Yes, baking a cake is a wonderful activity you can do from home! Take some pics and share with me!

Every day you will get different activities to complete. At the end of the week all of these activities and tasks will be on the same page so you can check to make sure you’ve completed everything. I will be checking EVERY DAY to make sure you’re doing some work, so yes, even though you’re not in school I’ll be checking on you. I’m looking at you… yes you… and you… and you…

Finally, I know this is a weird and wacky and completely unusual situation, but you are all EXTRAORDINARY and I know you will all be fine. Your parents and I are here to help you and we know that you will impress us with your maturity, your skills and your resilience.

As usual, I’m here if you need me. I MISS YOU ALREADY!

Mrs Andersen :)

Dear Parents,

I hope this document will help to make online learning a bit easier! Of course you will continue to have questions, just as I will, and I would like to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work through this unusual time together.

First and foremost, please do not put pressure on yourself to be a ‘teacher replacement’. Children learn and react differently when being taught by parents compared to their teachers, and this is something we are prepared for. Most of the tasks and activities I will be assigning can be done independently and students will be sending work back to me for feedback. If you would like to sit with your child and help them through the tasks that is your choice and something I am leaving up to you, however please remember that learning should be student led - try not to fall into the trap of doing their work for them. We want students to make mistakes, just as they would in the classroom - this is real learning!

Live lessons will be provided online Monday thru Friday from 8:30-9 am and 1-1:30 pm. This is when tasks will be uploaded and questions can be answered. You may decide to make a ‘timetable’ to help maintain structure for your child. The first week will be a bit different while we figure out how this all works, however children thrive from routines so I would encourage you to talk to your child about what they would like their day to look like. Creative and active tasks are in addition to this - examples of these will be provided over the week.

Each day there will be assignments in the courses sections on Canvas. As the week goes on I will add assignments to the courses..

Finally, this is a learning process for us all. I will ease into this new learning platform and I encourage you to do the same. Let’s be gentle on ourselves and the kids! Your children are extremely competent, and I have no doubt they will impress us with their ability to adapt to this situation.

As usual, I will be available through Class Dojo if you have any urgent questions.
