Assessment in the Upper School
ASM adopts a standards-based approach to grading. In the Upper School, this is part of the assessment and reporting process for non-IB Courses. IB Courses are assessed as per IB requirements and practices. The Upper School’s approach to standards-based assessment can be found in the Upper School Learning program parents and student resources. More information is available in the link below.
Upper School Standards-based Teaching, Learning & Assessment.Guiding Principles
Principles
The Reporting Schedule should:
provide clarity on academic progress to date and/or summative achievement
to students, parents, next school, university/college
allow students the time to develop essential skills and concepts before they receive summative grades that are transferred to the School Transcript
Align with the assessment philosophy (Standards-Based Assessment & Grading) of the school such as: skill development & opportunities to reach mastery
Support an emphasis on learning
Manage student stress and have a focus on student well-being
Be timely and effective in the context of the college/university application process
Align with the development of skills in two-year courses (IB)
Be mindful that for many students each year, ASM is a new school and they need time to adapt to their new learning environment
What do students need?
The opportunity and time to progress towards mastery of essential concepts and skills, with the space in which to take risks and make mistakes in this process.
To clearly understand what they are learning, how they are progressing, and be able to set individualized learning goals
To receive timely feedback on their learning
What do parents need?
To clearly understand how their children are being assessed.
To be well-informed of progress so they can support their child’s learning
Grade Point Average (GPA)
ASM does not normally report a GPA. Colleges and universities that require a GPA will normally assign their own method to determine a student's GPA. Click here for further details.
