When a Student is Absent
Please follow the steps below when you are absent:
If the absence is believed to be an Excused Absence, then please inform the office and provide the proper paperwork. While it is helpful for teachers to be informed when a student is absent, teachers do not have the authority to change an Unexcused Absence into an Excused Absence.
Upon return from being absent for any reason, students must first go to the middle school office for a yellow slip. The yellow slip must then be signed by each teacher whose class the student was absent in. This is very important because the slip informs the teacher whether the absence is excused or unexcused.
It is the student's full responsibility to complete any classwork, homework, projects, or tests that the student was absent for within the allotted time (please see the next bullet). Students should speak with teachers about what was missed as well as check the Homework Calendar for what was missed.
Students have the same amount of days to complete work and make-up tests from an absence as the amount of days he/she was absent. For example, if the student was absent 3 days, then the student has 3 days to make-up the work/tests. This is a middle school-wide policy.
If a student does not complete the work/tests within the allotted time from an absence, the student's work will be graded in the following way:
Late Homework/Classwork (Work Habits Grade)
Completing homework/classwork on time is very important. However, if the student is unable to complete work on time, it will be accepted up to 3 days late. If the assignment is:
1 to 2 days late, the student will receive 70% of the earned grade.
3 days late, the student will receive 50% of the earned grade.
More than 3 days late, the student will receive 0%
Any review given for a quiz or test is due by the time the test is taken and cannot be turned in afterward for a late grade.
Late Academic Work (Academic Grade)
The following policy applies for all middle school grade levels and all subjects:
Up to 2 weeks late, student will receive a penalty of 20% subtracted from their grade.
EX: Student earns 84%, but it is 5 days late 84% - 20% = 64%
More than two weeks late, student will receive 50% of original grade earned
After two weeks late, student gets 50% of original grade earned
EX: Student earns 84%, but it is 20 days late 50% of 84% = 42%
If an Academic assignment is turned in late, students lose the opportunity for a retake.
