Ms. Michelle Malkowski
About Ms. Malkowski
I am very happy to say that this is my 16th year teaching at ASFG. I previously taught sixth grade in Arizona for ten years. Although I spent a number of years in sunny Arizona, I actually grew up in not-so-sunny Michigan with my parents and two younger sisters. I got my Bachelor's Degree from Central Michigan University, then moved to Arizona to find a job teaching in a place where it is sunny for over 300 days a year - much like Guadalajara. While living in Arizona, I received my Master's Degree from the University of Arizona. Eventually I was ready for a change, which brought me to Guadalajara. I love the weather here in Guadalajara, as well as the people. When I am not at school, I enjoy relaxing outside in the sunshine, gardening, enjoying the company of Ms. Spils, and most of all playing with my dogs, two of which you can see above.

Course Description:
In math class, fifth graders will spend much of their time learning to work with fractions and incorporating them in all strands of math including algebra, measurement, geometry, and probability.
Homework Policy:
Completing homework to the best of your ability is very important. It is understandable that you may sometimes have a doubt about a particular math problem, but my expectation is that you to try to complete every problem as best you can. Those students who do that will receive all points for completing their homework. If problems are left blank, or not done to the best of your ability, the homework will not be accepted for a grade that day and you may turn it in late within the following 3 days for a lesser grade.
Starting your homework and realizing that you don't understand how to do it is not something that should happen. You are expected to ask questions in class until you understand. If you have more questions, you are expected to voluntarily attend ZAP and/or ask questions right after school. Taking your math notes home will also help. If you forget to take your notes home, look online for the math concept - many math tutorial videos can be found to help you.
Late Homework:
Completing your homework/classwork on time is very important in math class. However, if you are unable to complete your homework on time, it will be accepted up to 3 days late. If the assignment is:
1 to 2 days late, the student will receive 70% of the earned grade.
3 days late, the student will receive 50% of the earned grade.
More than 3 days late, the student will receive 0% though it must still be completed.
Any review given for a quiz or test is due by the time the test is taken and cannot be turned in afterward for a late grade.
Late Academic Work:
The following policy applies for every class in Middle School
Up to 2 weeks late, student will receive a penalty of 20% subtracted from their grade.
More than two weeks late, student will receive 50% of their earned grade.
If an Academic assignment is turned in late, students lose the opportunity for a retake.
If you did not like your grade on a Quiz or Test any student can complete a Retake to increase your academic grade. However, the student:
MUST have completed all that unit's classwork and homework well, and on time for that test/quiz.
MUST complete the quiz/test during the assigned recess time.
