Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)
SWL Paperwork:
It is a legal requirement that students completing structured workplace learning, have completed the following paperwork:
SWL arrangement form - all students must complete
SWL travel & accomodation form - only students that may travel in a vehicle with their employee, to work sites, collecting supplies and/or students that are required to stay at accomodation other than their normal place of residence for the purpose of this arrangement
(most) students in year 11 will complete SWL on either Wednesday or Friday, dependent on when their VET subject is scheduled
it is the students' and family's responsibility to organise their own SWL
ideally SWL should match the same industry as the VET subject, however some students may choose to trial a different area and see if they enjoy that work
students are covered by the school's insurance during their SWL and employees are legally required to pay a minimum of $5 per day
Note - by negotiation some will pay more, however the focus of the SWL should not be to earn money, rather to gain important experience in the industry
placements can be changed at any time
hours are negotiable with the employer, but should not regularly exceed a normal 8 hour day
if students are unable to attend their placement on any given day, they should contact both the employer and Aquinas (senior office) to let them know
students in year 11 will be shown how to access the OELLEN (outer eastern local learning and employment network) site, the OELLEN is funded by the Victorian government to develop networks and job opportunities for school students
more details can be found on the Victorian Government SWL site
