Catch up on all that's been happening in Year 11 VCE-VM
Students had the opportunity to explore Phillip Island as part of our education in communities. In a jam packed visit, we hiked the stunning George Bass Coastal Walk, took lessons in Kayaking and Stand up Paddleboarding and visited the Penguins. As lead in to the year 12 camp where students are responsible for everything from itinerary and food to equipment lists and safety briefings, students sourced their own tents and equipments for the camp. We also played our little part for the Cowes community, taking part in a beach clean up around the Cowes pier.
SPLATBALL & MORACK GOLF
Splatball is a fan favourite activity amongst students and staff in the VM program, as opportunity arises for year long acts of revenge! Students work in teams across several game variations with the added pleasure of the opportunity to shoot at their favourite teaching staff. The fun continued at Morack Golf centre where we enjoyed a round of mini golf and hit the driving range for some longest drives and nearest the pin compentitions.
Students have been developing navigation and map reading skills in Numeracy and had the chance to put these to the test with a hike around Werribbee Gorge. The photos attest to the beauty of this hike, and the select group of brave students that took up this challenge were pleasantly surprised with their enjoyment of the walk.
Year 11 and 12 WRS skills students from the Design and Sustainability teams ran an extremely successful fundraising carnival for their projects. With HSP's, Sausages, Fairy Floss, Snow Cones and Chocolate toss games on offer, the wider school community well catered for. Demand for HSP's was particularly high with quick sell outs at recess and lunch!! Students learnt a lot through the planning and carrying out of this day and were rightfully proud of their efforts after an exhausting day. Well done teams!
The year 11 VM students had a great day out at Melbourne Cable Park. Many students attempting for the first time activities such as Knee Boarding and Wake Boarding and we finished with a fun time on the Aqua Park obstacle course.
The focus for this activity was strengthening our relationships as a VM team through activity, challenging ourselves to attempt new skills and also careful consideration of the venues safety challenges and interventions.
The participation and positive involvment in this activity was great to see.
Students have been planning a house design in Numeracy classes, using technology to apply their measurement skills as budding young architects. Big Plans in Nth Melbourne kindly opened up their factory spaces for us to project these plans in real scale and see our designs come to life.
As part of their WRS learnings in workplace rights and responsibilities, students have completed 2 sessions with the young workers centre. The first session at Aquinas was a discussion about rights of workers, fair pay, working conditions and entitlements. Students engaged in spirited discussion with the presenter as they learnt all about how they should be treated in the workplace. The second session was held at the Victorian Trades Hall and focused on workplace harrassment, bullying, diversity and discrimination. Students were able to examine real case studies of actions that resulted in heavy penalties to employers. Students then completed a tour of the historic trades hall.
Our full VM cohort had a great opportunity to hear from one of the best in 'Razor' Ray Chamberlin - AFL Umpire. Ray had the students well and truly engaged as they heard about the importance of communication in his field, and the skills that Ray took from his teaching career into football. Students had plenty of quirky questions and great interaction with Ray who was very impressive in person!
In Numeracy, students are completing a project on purchasing their first car. We took the opportunity to visit Car City Ringwood and complete some fact finding. Students were tasked with finding different vehicle types, looking at fuel consumption, kms travelled, safety features and the needs for particular trades such as vans and utes.
Lucy is an ultra marathon runner who shared her stories with our year 11 VM crew as they relate to their current PDS unit on Health, nutrition and fitness. Lucy spoke about the mental strength required in her events and the training methods she uses to get herself ready. Lucy is a big advocate for carving out your own niche in life and creating a career from your paassion area. As one of Australia's youngest ultra runners, Lucy's journey was met with plenty of critics along the way, however she has forged her own path and achieved her goals despite the odds. Lucy also shared some close insights about her friend Ned Brockman and hinted at some future collaborations....watch this space.
