Work placements are a highly valued and rewarding part of a VCE-VM program. Students are able to get a taste for their chosen industry, or trial several to determine their best fit.
All VCE-VM students have the opportunity to complete work placements. Whilst for many this is the most practical and enjoyable part of their program the school work remains the highest priority. They will not be eligible for the VCE-VM certificate if they do not satisfactorily complete the required school work. In the unfortunate event that students fall behind in their school work, they may be removed from their work placements temporarily in order to catch up and complete the school work.
There are several different categories of work placements, as defined by Victorian Education.
Student that are not (yet) in a VCE-VM program can take part in work experience. Typically, this is offered to year 10 students, particularly those that have chosen a VCE-VM pathway for year 11 and beyond. Following the appropriate paperwork, Work experience students are covered by the school's insurance whilst working. Employees are required to pay students a rate of $5 per day, but may choose to pay more by negotiation. Not for profit organisations are not required to pay students.
Once a student has begun their VCE-VM, what was considered work experience is referred to as structured workplace learning. Typically, year 11 students will complete one day of SWL on either a Wednesday or Friday, depending on which day their VET course runs. Students in year 12 that do not undertake a SBAT (see below) will continue to complete one day of SWL each week. See the Structured Workplace Learning page for more information.
Most (not all) industries will offer SBAT opportunities for school students. This is an opportunity to begin their apprenticeship part time, whilst still completing the VCE-VM and graduating secondary school. SBAT students will begin their apprenticeship or traineeship part time as a school student. They are paid the award wage for that industry whilst working. Depending on the TAFE requirements, this will mean 2-3 days of paid employment during year 12 and 1-2 days during year 11.
See the SBAT page for further details.
