Catch up on all that's been happening in Year 12 VCE-VM
Our year 12 students have busily been putting the finishing touches on their own kitchette space in the J buidling. Thanks to generous funding from the Parents and Friends network, the VM classrooms have undergone some renovations, including new furniture, the kitchenette space and opening up the wall between rooms.
Daniel's wife Mel is a former school captain (1997)
Following our Numeracy unit on the issues of gambling in society, Year 12 students had the opportunity to listen to Daniel Ward's story. Daniel very openly shared his story as a gambling addict and how this developed throughout his AFL career at the Melbourne Football Club and beyond. His message to the students centred around creating a healthy habit with gambling should you choose to do it, by putting limits in place around being prepared to stick to them. We discussed the challenges as young adults with disposable income, and the traps of falling into addictive behaviour. Daniel gave the students great first hand knowledge of the challenges he faced and continues to work through in his life.
URBNSURF was a real highight of term 1 for many students. We had the chance to learn a new skills in a controlled environment and students had a lot of fun riding the waves with the crew at Urbnsurf.
Many students once stepped beyond their comfort zones and were rewarded with some great waves and good times.
In preparation for our group Amazing Race projects, students had the opportunity to test their team work completing several activities. Strike Bowling, adventure rooms and Holey Moley mini golf. Students had a great time with lots of competiticveness and team spirit on show!
Our senior VM students have spent the early parts of term 1, preparing and planning for the VM camp down to Wilsons Prom. We were blessed with some clear weather and students revelled in the challenge of planning their own itinerary, menu, shopping, equipment and activities. Meal time was a highlight, as our budding masterchefs worked together to fuel themselves up for some challenging hikes around the Prom. Spare time was spent exploring the beaches and river, with some students taking the opportunity to sneak in a spot of fishing at Tidal River. The students were very impressive in their behaviour and attitude throughout the camp.
Our year 12s were sent scrambling around the city, following clues and solving problems along the way as they competed in student designed Amazing Races. Students had a great time racing the clock and classmates to determine our champions.
Students have been planning and preparing their races in PDS group projects, focusing on communication and team skills.
Our full VM cohort had a great opportunity to hear from one of the best in 'Razor' Ray Chamberlin - AFL Umpire. Ray had the students well and truly engaged as they heard about the importance of communication in his field, and the skills that Ray took from his teaching career into football. Students had plenty of quirky questions and great interaction with Ray who was very impressive in person!
