Catch up on all that's been happening in Year 11 VCE-VM
Year 11 students had the opportunity to chat with para rower Alison Viney.
Tasmania-born Alexandra Viney was a promising young rower throughout her high school years. At the age of 18, in 2010, Al survived a high-speed car accident caused by a drunk driver. The accident left her with lasting impairments to her left elbow, forearm and hand.
Al was asked whether she had considered becoming a Para-athlete, an option she’d been unaware of. In November that year she began her journey as a Para-athlete when she sat in a boat for the first time since her accident, a second chance at her rowing dream.
The year 11 VM students took some time away from their regular busy schedules of school, tafe and work and connected with their full year 11 cohort on the Kakadu trips and City camps. Personally I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to connect more closely with the VM students on the Kakadu South trip and we had many laughs together exploring the wonders of the NT.
I may be slightly biased, but the VM students ability to show a growing maturity and high work ethic was clearly evident and they were huge contributors to camp life and the enjoyment of all.

Year 11 students visited the Victorian Institute of Sport late in term 2 as part of their Health unit in both Numeracy and Personal Development Skills. Students had the opportunity to test state of the art technology and hear from some of Victoria's leading athletes and coaches.
Student also had the opportunity to hear from paratriathlete Liam Twoomey about his story of courage and perseverance.
In between tasks in Work Related Skills, students have had the opportunity to create a side hustle small business, crafting goods for a Mothers Day Stall. This culminated in a highly successful stall held at lunch on Thursday 11/05. It was a total sell out, and great to see the enthusiasm our students took in selling their goods.
The students raised a tick over $500 to support the schools Tinnies for Vinnies drive. Great job team!
Students had a quick intro to striking and defence techniques at WFC Chirnside Park, under the instruction of pro fighter Erin 'Notorious' Carter.
This was a great exercise in communication and discipline, both key characteristics of mixed martial arts, not to mention a great work out!
Erin and gym owner Carli (Aquinas graduate 1997) finished with a Q&A session about their career journeys, emphasising the different pathways they had taken to get where they are now with the common message of making a career out of something they enjoy.
The year 11 VM students had a great day out at Melbourne Cable Park. Many students attempting for the first time activities such as Knee Boarding and Wake Boarding and we finished with a fun time on the Aqua Park obstacle course.
The focus for this activity was strengthening our relationships as a VM team through activity, challenging ourselves to attempt new skills and also careful consideration of the venues safety challenges and interventions.
The participation and positive involvment in this activity was great to see.
VM Guest Speaker Series
Lucy is an ultra marathon runner who shared her stories with our year 11 VM crew as they relate to their current PDS unit on Health, nutrition and fitness. Lucy spoke about the mental strength required in her events and the training methods she uses to get herself ready. Lucy is a big advocate for carving out your own niche in life and creating a career from your paassion area.
We are lucky enough to have Glenn Manton back this year to motivate like only he can. Glenn once again had our VM team spellbound with his confronting take on young people and their journey to success. Glenn recently presented a keynote to the Victorian Applied Learning Association. His message struck a chord with many students and we hope the cohort left inspired.

The year 11 team spent the day swinging and hanging from the treetops of Belgrave. Much fun was had watching each other step out of their comfort zones and tacklet the challenges at some serious heights! Students working in industries that require working at heights will have a new appreciation for what they are getting into and our teamwork and communication skills (mainly screaming) where on display. Students also got to witness first hand OH&S briefings and equipment, and their importance in the workplace, which we will look further into in WRS classes.
Here are all the slides and information from the Year 11 Parent Information night on 7th February.
