Coursework Evaluation to Meet Subject Matter RequirementS
IMPORTANT NOTE: This webpage provides information that went into effect in the Spring 2022 semester. Information and requirements are subject to change as the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) develops and implements regulations and further guidance in this area.
Azusa Pacific University evaluates coursework to meet the CTC's subject matter requirement ONLY for candidates actively enrolled in our teacher preparation programs. At this time, a fee is not required for an evaluation to be completed. Additionally, at this time, only one subject area evaluation will be completed per candidate. These coursework evaluations can take time to complete. They require review by a Credential Analyst, a professor with content expertise, and the Director of your Credential Program. Candidates should allow at least six to eight weeks for their evaluation to be completed (Please note: This six to eight week timeline can be longer during the Summer months).
It is important for candidates to review the subject matter requirement domains for the subject area they are pursuing and evaluate the coursework they have completed against these domains. Candidates who have successfully completed at least 12 semester units in their APU teacher credential program will be prioritized. As those evaluations are completed, subject area evaluations for candidates earlier in their APU teacher credential program will be processed.
For coursework to be able to be used toward meeting the CTC subject matter requirement the following requirements must be met:
Official transcripts showing the completion of coursework in the subject area, completed at a regionally accredited community college, college, or university must be on file with the Office of Credentials.
At least 20 semester units (or 10 upper-division semester units) in the subject area must be completed to meet the full CTC subject matter. In many cases, more than 20 semester units (or 10 upper-division semester units) in the subject area will be needed for candidates to demonstrate they have met the subject matter requirement via coursework.
The candidate must have at least one unique course for each of the domains in the subject area. The balance of the 20 semester units (or 10 upper-division semester units) may be in any course within the subject area.
A grade of C or higher is required in every course used to meet this requirement.
Unacceptable coursework includes:
coursework that is not applicable toward a bachelor's or higher degree (remedial)
professional development or continuing education units
in-service training or workshops
education and education methodology coursework, unless a letter is provided from the chair of the subject area department stating the course is equivalent to one offered by that department
coursework from a department outside the subject area being sought, unless a letter is provided from the chair of the subject area department stating the course is equivalent to one offered by that department
Questions about a coursework evaluation to meet subject matter should be directed to your Credential Analyst.
Upon completion of a Coursework Evaluation, if it is determined that the coursework submitted does not meet requirements for the CSET subtest(s) selected on the evaluation form, you will be informed by your Credential Analyst regarding which Domains of the subject matter area still need to be met. Should you decide to take additional coursework to fulfill the missing Domain areas, your Credential Analyst can provide you will full descriptions of the specific Domains needed in order to assist your selection of appropriate courses. APU School of Education cannot advise to nor pre-approve specific courses.
HELPFUL TIPS TO A COMPLETE A COURSEWORK EVALUATION FORM
Carefully review the domains for your subject area before completing the coursework evaluation form.
Do not just list one course you feel meets a domain, rather enter every course with a C or better that aligns with each appropriate domain.
Find the course descriptions from the academic year you took your courses and have them ready as you complete the form. Institutions generally have their academic catalogs that include course descriptions available on their website or course descriptions can often be found via a general internet search.
Make sure that official transcripts from each college or university you attended are on file with the Office of Credentials.
Failure to provide complete and accurate information will result in your coursework evaluation form being returned without being processed.
*Individuals seeking to meet subject matter in the area of Multiple Subjects who completed a degree major that is interdisciplinary in nature have an abbreviated evaluation process. Please note that you should only select the "Interdisciplinary Studies Option" in the Formstack Form if your major included coursework from multiple disciplines (general education coursework does not make a degree interdisciplinary, it must be a major requirement). Some examples may include but are not limited to Educational Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, or University Studies.
