Unit overview
NGSS Standards: MS-ESS2-4, MS-ESS2-5, MS-ESS2-6, MS-ESS3-2, MS-PS4-2
Unit Overview: This unit explores the phenomenon of La Niña and El Niño patterns and their impact on New Mexico's climate and drought conditions. Students will investigate the water cycle, air masses, ocean currents, and thermal energy transfer to understand how these factors contribute to regional climates and drought prediction.
Use this CALENDAR to write in your agenda each MONDAY!!!
Do Now (page 66): Write three things you notice (what you see happening) in the simulation (visual data model) to the left.
Activities for the day (p.66) - How does the ocean MOVE like that?
Why do hot air balloons fly? Draw a DIAGRAM to explain it!
Watch the Hot Air Balloon video - add details to the diagram you made as you listen.
Convection Demonstration - Does water move in a similar way? Draw a diagram of this demonstration (include particles/molecules and arrows to show movement).
EXIT TICKET (Your table must show me this before you can get your table's TASK CARD to get backpacks): On the whiteboard at your table, fill in the blanks for this sentence: "Warm air or water rises because..."
Do Now: Get a HANDOUT and GLUE IT on page 67 in your notebook!
Activities for the day:
Watch this video TWO TIMES while you work through the handout!:
the first time, just listen and write down any VOCABULARY WORDS you notice (anything we've learned about OR any words you don't know)
the second time, answer the questions on the guided notes.
When you're done with the 2nd watching and writing your answers with your group or on your own, CHECK YOUR ANSWERS with the teacher - the teacher will call on each table to answer a question or two, then will help if it is not quite right!
EXIT TICKET (Your table must show me this before you can get your table's TASK CARD to get backpacks): On the whiteboard at your table, fill in the blanks for this sentence: "The four factors that create ocean currents are: ..."
Do Now (page 68): Based on the maps below, which climate has a SMALLER DIFFERENCE between the high and low temperatures during the day--a city near the OCEAN, or a city INLAND?
Activities for the day:
Coastal Climates Lab (hands on + PhET simulation): Use the Google Doc (handed out in class) and the link to the right to complete the hands on and online investigations to help explain WHY coastal cities have smaller differences in their night time and day time temperatures!
EXIT TICKET (Your table must show me this before you can get your table's TASK CARD to get backpacks): On the whiteboard at your table, fill in the blanks for this sentence: "If a city is near the coast where there is a WARM ocean current, the climate there will be _____________________ because the ocean ________________________________."
Do Now (p. 68 at the bottom): "If a city is near the coast where there is a WARM ocean current, the climate there will be _____________________ because the ocean ________________________________."
Activities for the day:
Oceans + Climate Independent Project: Add the information to the RIGHT to your La Nina Winter Independent Project section.
Do Now (p. 28 in agenda): Check your grades for week 6 of Quarter 4 and write them on page 28 in your agenda. Then LIST anything you need to retake or redo or turn for this SATURDAY in your agenda (you can find these in "Classwork" and then "View Your Work".
Activities for the day
LN-SMT2: Take the Quizziz Standard Mastery Ticket for this week. You can take it as MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT until you get the grade you want.
La Nina Winter INDEPENDENT PROJECT: Make sure you've added the information for ALL THREE WEEKS so far! There is a Google Doc below and printed in the room (please return the handout if you use it in class).
