Our Wellness Center provides supports and resources to students through individual counseling, as well as small group counseling. We believe it's important for students to have access to a safe, quiet, and confidential space in the school as they need. As evidenced by the data below, our students leave with a much better mindset and ability to access their full potential with learning and interacting with peers. Students spend a maximum of 10 mins meeting with us unless arranged otherwise.
How does a student start and stop support in the Wellness Center?
A student can be referred by Teachers or Families to a School Counselor at anytime.
Each student starts with 5 sessions in the Wellness Center. This can be split up as once a week or over five consecutive days.
When any student first comes to the Wellness Center, student will set a goal with a School Counselor for their time in the Wellness Center. At our last session we will review our growth towards our goal.
At the end of the 5 sessions, the counselor will review data and notes to give recommendations on stopping or continuing support for an additional 5 sessions, and the final decision is made as a team.
When can a student go to the wellness center?
They have a scheduled appointment as part of their 5 sessions arranged by their teacher, counselor, and family.
If they’ve asked for teacher permission and the time is appropriate (much like a bathroom break).
You’ve requested they receive support from a School Counselor.
There is a problem or need for support that can’t be addressed in the classroom (ex. ongoing friendship trouble).
How does a student go to the Wellness Center?
The student will receive a GREEN “Wellness Center Pass” card.
Each classroom as ONE pass. It is up to you whether you would like to send just one student at a time or allow multiple.
Teacher will continue instruction same as if a student requested a bathroom break.
Upons student’s arrival they will set their timer and sign in.
The student is responsible for setting a timer for the agreed upon break time (10 min max).
Once finished, the student signs out, returns to class with pass.
“What if...”
...there is already a student getting support in the Wellness Center?
Students are allowed to visit at the same time, given that there is enough room or support.
If we are unable to see a student in that moment, we will make a note and try to meet with them before the end of the day.
...the counselors are not there?
We will try to be present to meet the needs of our students. We can be communicated over walkie or phone extension 72842.
If no adults are available to supervise, student will leave a note and return to class.
....the counselors are having a small group or meeting with a student?
Students are still allowed to take an individual break if we are having a group or working with students.
In the “safe space” area of the wellness center there are noise cancelling headphones and earbuds to help students.
Students must follow our “Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible” Wellness Center expectations.
...the student is in trouble?
The Wellness Center is not a punitive place or time out zone.
We solve problems and restore justice with students in the Wellness Center.
