Teacher Spotlight - Mrs. Rich (Ruby Spanish/French)

Conducted by: Suhani Kapil

I interviewed Mrs. Monica Rich, the world language teacher on Ruby. She currently teaches both Spanish and French. Here are her captivating responses to my questions!

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?

"Great question! So, I actually really like my job. I knew I wanted to be a teacher - specifically a world language teacher - when I was in 7th grade. But if I had to choose something else...maybe an interior designer? Or a flower farmer."

How would you compare school now to when you were in middle school?

"Kids are waaaaaaaaay more tolerant now. You could not be anything other than a white, heterosexual, middle or upper middle class, sporty kid to be fully accepted in my middle school on Long Island. If you weren't thin, blonde, rich and straight you had a really tough time socially.  While I still think middle schoolers can be pretty mean to each other, I think they are much more tolerant than they were in the 1980s and 90s."

What was one of your most interesting/weird days as a teacher?

"Years ago, my French AP class did presentations about a country and they had to bring in a food item for everyone to try. I had an exchange student from Vietnam at the time, and he was presenting on his own country since it was a former French territory. He brought in a coconut soup that had gelatinous globs in it. It tasted good, but none of us could figure out what the globs were. In English he said, "They are LEECHES". Several students turned white and one girl almost threw up. In the end, we finally figured out that he meant the fruit LYCHEE, not the blood-sucking invertebrates. That memory has stayed with me for 17 years. LOL."

What do you like doing in your free time?

"I spend a lot of time talking to my kids, listening to music, working on house and farm projects. I worked on a crew team for the city of Hartford. I train indoors all winter and spend a lot of the spring/summer/fall on the Connecticut river."

What’s something few people know about you?

"I'm a decent self-taught carpenter and have built lots of furniture and done repairs in our home."

What’s your unpopular opinion?

"I do not like pasta."

What is the best gift you have ever received?

"My husband gave me a puppy for Christmas in 2018. An animal as a gift will always trump any other gift!"

If you were a superhero, what powers would you want to have?

"Invisibility. And the ability to fly, of course."

What type of music are you into?

"Oooh - I LOVE MUSIC! I love all kinds of music, except maybe country. I went to high school in the early 1990s, so grunge will always hold a special place in my heart. All my babysitting money went to going to concerts like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers. My husband and son play a lot of classic rock. The whole family likes Cake. My older siblings were all into 70s & 80s punk when I was growing up, so I love The Clash and The Ramones. My oldest daughter got me into Hozier, Lord Huron, Phoebe Bridgers, the 1975, among others. My 6th grader plays a lot of SZA, Doja Cat, Sabrina Carpenter, The Weeknd, etc. SO MUCH MUSIC! And not nearly enough time to listen to it all!"

NFL Playoffs

By: Connor Hall

It's that time of year again. The NFL playoffs, where the best teams battle it out to make it to the super bowl. There's the AFC and the NFC championships, and then the winners play in the famous Super Bowl. Right now four teams have made it to this stage, The San Francisco 49ers who will face (or have faced when this article is out) the powerful Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC game and the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC matchup.

Let’s break down the NFC championship game.  First we have the Eagles; they have been powerful all season but particularly at the start of the year, when they were undefeated at 8-0 until they lost to the Washington Commanders. Philadelphia has a great offense, not to mention their insane defense. Their quarterback Jalen Hurts is a young player at only 24 years old, but he plays above his level as he not only can throw on point but is a threat to run the ball. The 49ers will be putting a lot of pressure on him with their stacked defense but we will get to that later. Jalen has a lot of weapons to get the ball too, like A.J. Brown. A.J. can run routes like crazy, and can catch it too. The Eagles' running back is 25 year old Miles Sanders. Miles can run like the wind and if he can find the gap between the defensive line, he will be gone. Their defense is pretty good with players like Fletcher Cox, who plays defensive tackle, and Josh Sweat, who plays defensive end.

Now let's talk about the explosive defense of the 49ers. First, they have Nick Bosa, who has a chance of getting defensive player of the year and he is a dominant pass rusher. They also have a powerful offense, led by Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Their quarterback is a rookie named Brock Purdy, who was forced to take over due to multiple injuries., Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant, as he was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, which is very surprising as he is full of skill and brought his team to the playoffs. One of his favorite targets is tight end George Kittle, and we can't forget about the wide receivers with Deebo Samuel wearing number 19 . A newbie to the team, Christan McCaffrey has played well. He has been in the NFL for a while but has been at the Charlotte Panthers until he was traded to San Francisco. There is some question if Brock Purdy will play or if Jimmy Garoppolo will play. Jimmy was the first string quarterback but he hurt his ankle in week 13 of the season.

Then we have the AFC championship, which has a pretty even matchup with Patrick Mahomes leading the Chiefs, and Joe Burrow with the Bengals. We gotta start with the team in red as they have a stacked offense with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes can run but can also throw on point and he is a star athlete. But in a playoff game against the Jacksonville, Jaguars Mahomes had some sort of ankle injury. He came out and ran to go get an x-ray, while this happened backup, quarterback Chad Henne led a 98 yard drive to score. But he was only in there for a little bit as he came out limping. He powered through and played the rest of the game and led them to victory. Chiefs fans had lots of reasons to be nervous, but he is “doing good,” as he said in a press conference before practice. One of Mahomes’s best outlets was wide receiver Tyreek Hill, but he got traded for 5 draft picks. This seemed like a problem for the Kansas City team but they have Juju Smith-Schuster, who plays wide receiver,  and Travis Kelce as tight end..

But it isn't going to be easy for the Chiefs, as they have to face the Bengals. The Bengals have Joe Burrow, who has already been to the super bowl and is a running back. Joe Mixon. Mixon has lots of speed and some moves too. Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is also a good option for Joe. The Bengals also have a powerful OL (offensive line). Joe Burrow can throw dimes to the open man. They could have gotten the 1 seed if they beat Buffalo, but that game was canceled due to the collapsing of safety Damar Hamlin. They made it to the Super Bowl last year, but lost by 3 against the LA Rams.

So these games will be exciting, close and exhilarating. The stadiums will be packed and you better be ready to sit down and watch a good game of football!

President Biden

The FBI searched President Biden’s residence again after previously discovering documents that were marked classified at the Penn Biden Center, his garage, and his house in Wilmington, which was searched three times by the FBI. The six documents from the most recent search were discovered with handwritten notes from when President Biden was serving as vice president, and material from during his time working in the senate.

Legally, this will not affect the president, and in fact, considering his cooperation and ability to voluntarily let the FBI search through his residence, it would do the opposite. The FBI is suggesting that the documents found may have been classified at the time but don’t contain information that is classified anymore. However, politically and optically, the stakes aren’t looking as good. President Biden could be facing an unintended adverse which could stop the momentum of the democrats coming out of midterm elections. The case seems to have put President Biden in an uncomfortable position and is causing some members of his own party to to worry at the scene of his mishandling of sensitive documents.

Lastly, to justify the comparison between the similar situation with former president Donald Trump, there is a fine line between the two cases solely because of the way they both handled it. As I mentioned before, President Biden calmly accepted his mistake and cooperated well with the FBI, while Former President Trump obstructed against them.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister

Six days after the shocking resignation of Former New Zealand Prime MInister, Jacinda Ardern, New Zealanders welcomed a new prime minister on January 25, 2023. At the inauguration ceremony in the capital, Wellington, Chris Hippkins at age 44 was officially sworn in as New Zealand’s prime minister. However, New Zealanders are still shaken by the absence of Former Prime Minister Ardern.

Videos showing Ardern leaving Parliament indicate many onlookers cheering her on and being supportive of her decision. Several lawmakers and members of state gathered outside, and many of whom were very clearly emotional as they said goodbye.

Why and how did one young women have such a great impact on her country? Jacinda Ardern was just 37 years old when she became head of the New Zealand government but she led the country with great skill and pride. Throughout the 2020 pandemic, Ardern won a lot of praise for her ability to successfully contain the virus, which led to them being able to save as many as 80,000 lives. After the March 15 mosque terror attacks, Jacinda Ardern promoted unity and compassion. During a press conference she stated, “You may have chosen us, but we utterly reject and condemn you.”

Ardern stepped down after not having enough fuel to keep leading, but it is clear that she left an impression that is never to be forgotten.

You Can Call Me A Frog (Poem)

By: Harveen Kaur

I live in the water and live on land

Love to jump as much as I can

I could be green or black or tan

Any other color, don’t you understand

You can call me a frog

I may be very very poisonous

You better be watching out

When I’m a child water is my hideout

Those insects are making me ravenous

You can call me a frog

A toad I will be mistaken for

My skin is a bit more slimy and smooth

The rainforest is home that’s the truth

I would love to be by the lakeshore

You can call me a frog
