Liberal Studies Requirements – Students who entered '24-'25

The requirements below apply to Liberal Studies degree students who started at Antioch in the Academic Year '24-'25 (all concentrations): Summer '24, Fall '24, Winter '25, or Spring '25.

General overview:

• A minimum of 24 semester/36 quarter units in transfer. 

• 180 – 200 quarter units total, earned at AULA and transferred in. Most students aim to complete with 180 units to save time and tuition costs.

• 45 units minimum of residency at Antioch. Note that Prior Learning does not count toward the residency requirement. 

• 60 units minimum of upper division units (3000- and 4000-level courses). Students can take more than 60 upper division units, but not less. All AULA courses are upper division with a few exceptions.

Antioch core requirements

• EDU 3600 Transformative Education (3 quarter units)

• Two Antioch academic writing courses: one 3000-level and one 4000-level, with the possible addition of WRT 2510 Academic Writing mentorship (6 quarter units, or 7 units if you take WRT 2510)

• Two Mission Core electives (6 quarter units). See below for a list of options for meeting this requirement. Each quarter's schedule will include 2 or 3 Mission Core options.

Domains of knowledge (i.e. general education) requirement

30 quarter units with at least 3 units minimum units in each of the six domains listed below, with the 12 remaining units in any domain except Social Science and Communication. Additional classes in the domains will count as elective units or concentration requirements where appropriate. These units can be transferred in, taken at Antioch, or both.

•         Communications - 3 units

•         Fine Arts - 3 units

•         Humanities - 3 units

•         Physical Sciences - 3 units

•         Quantitative Methods - 3 units

•         Social Sciences - 3 units

•         Additional units to reach 30 in any Domain of Knowledge

Immersive learning: Community-based learning requirement PLUS a capstone

• 6 units, typically 2 activities

• Community-based learning: Enroll on an Internship or Prior Learning (not Independent Studies) to fulfill this requirement. Occasionally, a class will be offered that includes a community-based learning component and also fulfills this requirement, such as Psychology Field Experience. Students who transfer to Antioch with only 45 units remaining cannot use Prior Learning to fulfill the community-based learning requirement.

• Capstone: Take a Capstone Service Learning course (LIB-4600) or a Capstone internship (LIB-4610 or any 4000-level internship in consultation with your advisor.

Major/Minor Area of Concentration requirements (not applicable to General Liberal Studies concentrators)

• Major Area of Concentration: 40 units (earned or transferred in; 20 units minimum of upper division are recommended)

•  Minor Area of Concentration: 20 units (earned or transferred in; 10 units minimum of upper division are recommended)
