in use images - thanks juhi :3
process images - basically a series of pictures of me :D
left -
Trying to fit the webcam to my frame. Early iteration of the post style + logo.
right -
The first process image I took. getting the webcam to work for the first time.
left -
Testing the pop-ups. Camera not working...
right -
Testing buttons and having them navigate between different sketches. (Each "page" or "filter" was intended to be a new sketch.)
left -
Testing camera with my roommate. At this point I was trying to get the facial tracking to work. (A series of points showing certain pixels on her face should have drawn.)
right -
More testing of filters and buttons. My face warped her momentarily. If I attemped to change too many face pixels then the whole code would crash.
narrative description - A photobooth that plays on the idea of social media, online perception, and looking perfect. With a webcam attached to a monitor, a picture is taken of the user, 3-2-1 photobooth style. The picture is then displayed on the screen, allowing the user to see themselves. A series of questions will prompt, “Is your skin clear enough?” “Do you look skinny enough?” and “Do you look happy?” Depending on your answer, a filter would apply to the displayed image, warping the photo dramatically. Finally, you will prompted to post your photo, no matter how warped it is, leaving you with a post with a witty caption.
process reflection - This process was very troubling for me. Despite having some coding experience, and also specifically creative coding experience, I definitely bit off way more than I could chew with the technical aspect of my project. I was unable to properly implement the filter portion of my project, which was the main concept. While I was able to execute a visual style I had set out to do, I was unable to find success with adding face tracking filters. Other things I wish I added: hover animations, users being able to download (or print) their image, using an external webcam…
Despite this, I feel comfortable with my skills to set up a monitor and camera, and I was able to use those skills. Beyond that, I learned a lot more about p5.js, other javascript libraries, and css and html… way more than I did before. While I did not meet my own expectations for this project, I do find comfort in the fact that I had a lot of personal growth with this project.
I very much so want to revisit this project and complete it to my initial ideation with more time and better resources. I really connected with my initial concept and not having completed it has left me feeling deeply unsatisfied.
