Our very own Webster Memorial Theatre in Arbroath, was the perfect host location for the S2 final of our 'Jukebox Musical' PBL.
Tasked with answering their driving question to pitch an original idea for a brand new jukebox musical, our young people have spent the last few weeks coming up with characters, storylines, locations, casting preferences, music and so much more...for their take on what would make a successful jukebox musical.
Not only did our finalists win their classroom pitch, they had to prepare for a final presentation in front of a real audience! Staff, parents, carers and industry experts at the Webster Memorial Theatre watched as our young people presented their take on what they think would make the next, big successful jukebox musical.

S1 - Arbroath Explorers
What if we could create a website to encourage and celebrate what Arbroath has to offer.
Take a look at this unique take on Arbroath as our S1 year group got out and about to promote 2 different kinds of walks in our town.
Dog walking and Accessibility for all were the focus to help us launch of brand new ARBROATH EXPLORERS website - made for you!
P7 - S1 Transition
The Wonders of Arbroath
An amazing project that supported P7's transition to 'the big school'.
We were so lucky to work with amazing venues to celebrate the best of Arbroath and our incoming S1 year group were amazing!
They also got to do this first Academy project in their Crew which has helped them to build relationships and collaborate even before they join us in August. The perfect welcome to Arbroath Academy!
Community Connected
Project Based Learning gives us a great opportunity to work with local partners and organisations. We also see it as a great chance to bring some of the wonderful projects and pupil work out into the community.
We are incredibly lucky to have partner organisations who can support our vision. Susan Curran from Angus Alive has afforded us her own time and talent along with offering the amazing space at Arbroath's magnificent Signal Tower Museum.
Pop along to The Signal Tower in Arbroath where you will be sure to catch pupil work throughout the year.
Both of these projects were inspired by the work of Daydream Believers - which you can find out more about at the bottom of the PBL page in additional resources.
We are delighted to share some of our PBL work from across the Arbroath Academy faculties.
We have a dedicated PBL curricular space in S1 & S2. We also deliver subject specific PBL in the BGE, giving our pupils a familiarity with the PBL protocols and a consistency of practices across their classroom interactions.
You can find out more about our PBL strategy at the bottom of the this page.
We hope you enjoy seeing what we have been up to:

S1 - Loch Eil
An incredible experience for our S1 pupils and staff. This year we attended Loch Eil, in our S1 Crews, and done a bit of preparation to ensure we were open minded for our experience and responsibilities.

S2 Changemakers
Last year we delivered the YPI programme for the first time at Arbroath Academy for a cohort of pupils who expressed an interest.
The successful learning journey the pupils embarked on allowed for the easy decision to make this a whole year group roll out, and we also decided to use our dedicated S2 PBL space to deliver it.
This is such a meaningful PBL for our S2's, with one group going on to win £3000 for their chosen charity, but more importantly, it will be the start of a change making journey for many more, who will feel empowered to make a difference.

What is Project Based Learning?
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which pupils learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.
Pupils work on a project over an extended period – from a week up to a term – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience.
As a result, pupils develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills.
Why do we believe that PBL will have an impact for our pupils?
The introduction of PBL will provide pupils with rich learning experiences in which they can confidently describe the skills they are developing.
We believe that pupils will respond positively to the greater opportunities to collaborate with others and are given more responsibility for their own learning.
Projects have been proven to be an effective and engaging way to motivate young people in their learning, allowing them to strengthen their skills, while driving forward work that is rooted in a real-world context. Pedagogical approaches which involve cross-departmental collaboration, and the opportunity to go on a learning journey, provide increased value in a knowledge-engaged, skills-rich curriculum.
To be it, we need to see it. The immersive professional learning and ongoing exposure to international examples of innovative practice develops vision, opportunities, and collaborative pedagogical approaches. This FNGL diagram is a useful reference:
