Powerful Partnerships at Arbroath Academy
Our ambition is to become the heart of the Arbroath learning community. We have established co-design work with Angus Council and Angus Alive on several of our initial Project Bases Learning Courses.
We have also presented a case for a Youth Town Board to be established as part of ‘Our Arbroath’ ambition to transform the town with the £20m Government Levelling Up Fund scheme. Four of our pupils will join the Youth Town Board to ensure the future of Arbroath is considered by our young people alongside other generations and representatives of our town.
We are working with community partners to support our pupils to establish a community footprint by producing ‘beautiful work’ in our local area.
The first of our PBL work will be exhibited at the historic Signal Tower Museum in December 2024. We will also see work displayed at the town Library from February 2025 until April 2025.
HoWLS - Habits of Work and Learning
HoWL's are Habits of Work and Learning that we would like our young people to strive to embody as they not only help with their progression and achievement within school but also prepare them for the wider world of work; they are habits that employers will be looking for when employing new employees.
Each week, staff at Arbroath Academy nominate pupils from their classes within the BGE and the Senior Phase who have demonstrated our HoWL's; Be Determined, Achieve Your Best and Be Kind. These names are shared with pupils, parents and celebrated at Community. We have developed a rubric that staff are using to decide the rating 0-4 for each of our HoWLs; Be Determined, Achieve Your Best and Be Kind. These ratings are included in all the parent reports that we are writing through the school year.
My Future, My Way at Arbroath Academy 2024/25
My Future, My Way is a new course which we are trialing for S2 pupils from November to April. It is based on the Freshman Academy work observed during the Academies of Nashville study visit. It introduces pupils to self-discovery, career exploration and planning. This work will be used to support course choices for S3.
The course supports the understanding and development of key transferable skills including: - digital literacy, financial planning, leadership and communication. The pupils will complete the course by creating a personal action plan which can be used to plan for future goals both within school and beyond.
Pocket Academy at Arbroath Academy 2024/25
Our Principal Teachers Health Improvement and Expressive Arts are working with Scott Marshall, our BCSO, to develop Pocket Creative Academy and Pocket Sports Academy.
This work is currently for S5/6 pupils who are studying one or more Higher subjects in the faculty. A bespoke programme of engagement is being developed to support pupils to look at what education and career options are available within these chosen subject areas.
This is based on the work that staff have experienced at the Academies of Nashville and in Detroit.
