Jesus had many disciples and out of the many disciples Jesus ORDAINED TWELVE which he also called APOSTLES.
And here is the list of the NAMES of the original twelve Apostles from the gospels of Luke, Matthew, Mark and the book of Acts of the Apostles in chapter 1 as they are listed in the order that these three gospels list and the book of Acts them by name.
The gospel of John does not have a list of the twelve Apostles. Under each name of each Apostle of Jesus, I will give the verses so you can compare each gospel for yourself.
And for those readers who like the SHORT quick answer simply read Acts 1:13 for the names of the ELEVEN Apostles who remained FAITHFUL to Jesus.
We all know that name of the TRAITOR of Jesus. The name of the twelfth Apostle is Judas Iscariot who BETRAYED Jesus.
Please notice that I numbered the eleven Apostles in the book of Acts in the same order that the gospel of Luke numbers them. Not that it makes any difference but rather to be consistent.
Acts 1:13.
“And when they came in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both (#1) Peter, and (#3) James, and (#4) John, and (#2) Andrew, (#5) Philip, and (#8) Thomas, (#6) Bartholomew, and (#7) Matthew, (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Simon Zelotes, and (#1) Judas the brother of James.”
And now for the long answer where my readers can compare all the Scriptures for themselves.
Apostle #1
Simon who was also called Peter and Simon Peter.
According to all three gospels that list the names of the twelve Apostles. Simon Peter is always listed first.
Gospel of Luke
Luke 6:12-16.
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14. (#1). Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and (#2) Andrew his brother, (#3) James and (#4) John, (#5) Philip and (#6) Bartholomew,
Luke 6:15. (#7) Matthew and (#8) Thomas, (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Simon called Zelotes,
Luke 6:16. And (#11) Judas the brother of James, and (#12) Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.”
Gospel of Matthew
Matthew 4:18-22.
“Matthew 4:18. And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, (#1) Simon called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
Matthew 4:19. And he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Matthew 4:20. And they straightway left their nets and followed him.
Matthew 4:21. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
Matthew 4:22. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.”
Also read Matthew 10:1-6.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Matthew 10:4. (#11) Simon the Canaanite, and (#12) Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.”
Gospel of Mark
Mark 1:16-20.
Mark 1:16. Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw (#1) Simon and (#2) Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
Mark 1:17. And Jesus said unto them, Come you after me, and I will make you become fishers of men.
Mark 1:18. And straightway they forsook their nets and followed him.
Mark 1:19. And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
Mark 1:20. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.”
According to the gospel of Mark here in chapter 1 verses 16-20, the first FOUR Apostles of Jesus are (#1) Simon, (#2) Andrew his brother, (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother.
BUT, for some reason, the writer of the gospel of Mark CHANGES the ORDER of the names of the twelve Apostles that DIFFER from the gospel of Luke and the gospel of Matthew and EVEN from how the names are listed here in Mark 1:16-20.
I will point out some of the DIFFERENCES when we get to the name and number of each Apostle according to the gospel of Luke.
And why I chose the gospel of Luke to list first is because Luke is NOT one of the original TWELVE Apostles and Luke was a physician or a doctor.
And doctors are usually very observant of DETAILS and they have to remember details in their profession.
That is just my own opinion and to ME, the ORDER in which the Apostles are listed is not all that important in regards to being saved.
But some ATHEISTS will try and use discrepancies in the Bible to try and overthrow the faith of some weaker Christians. So never be deceived by atheists because they cannot correctly interpret the Scripture without the Holy Spirit.
Mark 3:13-19.
“And he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
Mark 3:14. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
Mark 3:15. And to have the power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Mark 3:17. And (#2) James the son of Zebedee, and (#3) John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
Mark 3:18. And (#4) Andrew, and (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew, and (#7) Matthew, and (#8) Thomas, and (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Thaddaeus, and (#11) Simon the Canaanite,
Mark 3:19. And (#12) Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into a house.”
Did you notice that in Mark 1:16-20 that Andrew was listed as number two and in Mark 3:13-19.
Andrew is listed as number 4 and John is listed as number 2. This may be due to that Peter James and John seemed to be closer followers of Jesus than the rest of the twelve Apostles.
So I will list the order of the Apostles of Jesus according to the gospel of Luke.
But I will use all of the gospels to fill in the whole name of each of the original twelve Apostles of Jesus that are given to us.
Some of the Apostles such as Philip and Bartholomew are only known by the one name.
While other Apostles such as James and John are known as brothers. For example John the brother of James. And three of the Apostles were surnamed by Jesus. You will learn who Jesus surnamed as you continue to compare Scriptures with Scriptures.
Apostle #2
Andrew the brother of Simon Peter
Gospel of Luke
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14.
Matthew 10:1-6.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Please notice that in Mark 1:16-20 that Andrew the brother of Simon Peter is the SECOND Apostle the Jesus called because he was WITH Simon Peter his brother when Jesus called Simon to follow him. And the BOTH left their fishing and followed Jesus. BUT in Mark 3:19 the writer of the gospel of Mark CHANGES the ORDER in how he LISTS the names of the twelve Apostles and Andrew the brother of Simon Peter is listed as being the FOURTH Apostle of Jesus.
Mark 3:13-19.
Mark 3:13. “And he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
Mark 3:14. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
Mark 3:15. And to have the power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Notice that in the gospel of Mark in the third chapter that Andrew is listed FOURTH instead of second. But remember that Andrew was WITH his brother Simon when Jesus called them BOTH to be fishers of men in Mark 1;16,17.
Apostle #3
James the son of Zebedee who Jesus surnamed Boanerges along with his brother John which means The Sons of Thunder
Gospel of Luke
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14.
Matthew 10:1-4.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

Mark 1:19. And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Mark 3:17. And (#2) James the son of Zebedee, and (#3) John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder: (Again, the reason that I believe Mark changed the order is because Peter, James, and John seemed to be closer to Jesus than the rest of the twelve Apostles. Also, notice that ALL THREE, Peter, James, and John were SURNAMED by Jesus. So even though James is listed here as number two I am following the order listed in the gospel of Luke which lists James the son of Zebedee as number three)

Notice the Matthew lists Thomas before himself. Perhaps Matthew did this because he is the writer of the gospel of Matthew. But both the gospel of Luke and the gospel of Mark list Matthew as Apostle number seven. Again, to ME, the order they are listed is not of importance but atheists will use discrepancies like this to try to disprove the Bible so do not be deceived.
Matthew 10:1-4.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;

Mark 3:15. And to have the power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Apostle #8
Thomas which is called Didymus in John 20:24
Thomas is also known by Christians as doubting Thomas because he would not believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead until he saw Jesus for himself and put his fingers in the nail holes in his hands.
Gospel of Luke
Luke 6:12-16.
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

Mark 3:13. “And he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
Mark 3:14. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
Mark 3:15. And to have the power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Mark 3:17. And (#2) James the son of Zebedee, and (#3) John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

Mark 3:19. And (#12) Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into a house.”
Apostle #9
James the son of Alphaeus
Gospel of Luke
Luke 6:12-16.
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14.
Matthew 10:1-4.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Matthew 10:4. (#11) Simon the Canaanite, and (#12) Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.”
Gospel of Mark
Mark 3:13-19.
Mark 3:13. “And he went up into a mountain, and called unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.
Mark 3:14. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
Mark 3:15. And to have the power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Apostle #10
Simon called Zelotes. Also called Simon the Canaanite.
Gospel of Luke
Luke 6:12-16.
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14.
Notice that both the gospel of Matthew and the gospel of Mark REVERSE the order of Simon the Canaanite and Judas the brother of James. And they call Judas the brother of James as Labbaeus who is surnamed Thaddaeus. Perhaps the Apostle of Jesus surnamed Judas the brother of James after Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus to avoid confusing the two when writing about Judas the brother of James to others knew that Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. At the end of this study, I will give you some other verses that you can study on your own concerning Judas the brother of James and NOT Judas Iscariot.
Matthew 10:1-4.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Apostle #11
Judas the brother of James
When just reading the verses where the Apostle of listed by name in the group of twelve there seems to be a discrepancy with Apostle number eleven. In the Gospel of Luke, Apsotle, number eleven is named Judas the brother of James. In the gospel of Matthew, his name Labbaeus who is surnamed Thaddaeus. And in the gospel of Mark, he is named Thaddaeus.
Gospel of Luke
Luke 6:12-16.
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14.
Again, please notice that both the gospel of Matthew and the gospel of Mark REVERSE the order of Simon the Canaanite and Judas the brother of James. And they also call Judas the brother of James as Labbaeus who is surnamed Thaddaeus.
Now. I myself have no idea why the gospel of Matthew and the gospel of Mark have a DIFFERENT name for the Apostle Judas the brother of James other than they were trying to avoid CONFUSING Judas the brother of James with Judas Iscariot the Apostle that betrayed Jesus.
In Acts 1:13 is the only other LIST of the original Apostles of Jesus without the betrayer Judas Iscariot and the ELEVEN Apostle is listed a Judas the brother of James.
Acts 1:13.
“And when they came in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.”
So as for me, I will call the eleventh Apostle of Jesus by the name Judas the brother of James. For you see, the ONLY time the name Thaddaeus is found is in Matthew 10:3 and Mark 3:18. But we continue to see the name Judas in the gospel of Matthew and in the gospel of John and in the book of Acts of the Apostles.
Matthew 10:1-4.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Apostle #12
Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor
Gospel of Luke
Luke 6:12-16.
“Luke 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:13. And when it was daylight, he called unto him his disciples: and of them, he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Luke 6:14.
Matthew 10:1-4.
“Matthew 10:1. And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, (#1) Simon, who is called Peter, and (#2) Andrew his brother; (#3) James the son of Zebedee, and (#4) John his brother;
Matthew 10:3. (#5) Philip, and (#6) Bartholomew; (#7) Thomas, and (#8) Matthew the publican; (#9) James the son of Alphaeus, and (#10) Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Mark 3:16. And (#1) Simon he surnamed Peter;
Here are some verses where Judas the brother of James is used while the surname Thaddaeus is not found again in any verse of Scripture.
Matthew 13:55.
“Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?”
Luke 6:16.
“And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.”
John 14:22.
“Judas said unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself unto us, and not unto the world?”

And to me, the truth concerning who Jesus TRULY is, according to the Bible ITSELF, is the Biblical Unitarian view of Jesus.
Once Christians, Jews, Muslims, and even atheists understand the REASON that Yahweh CREATED the Son of MAN, Jesus, was to have DOMINION over the work of Yahweh’s hands.
And after you understand that the REASON that Yahweh did that is to STILL His ENEMIES, Satan and the fallen angels.
Then you can understand that God made His human Son to become “a” Lord, “a” King, and “a” God, under and subject to his God and Father in order to JUDGE Satan and the fallen angels.
For a deeper understanding of this WAR that Lucifer and one third of the angels waged against the throne of Almighty God, please read the studies under the subject category called ** Q-0 Why Are We Here? Is God at WAR? **.
