Base is where you will live, eat and play during your time on program. It is communal living at its finest. Some call it rustic; others call it home!
We recommend flying into Southwest Florida International Airport.
We are currently staying in a co-ed communal-style dorm in a community park facility. Cots or bunk beds, and bedding such as blankets, sheets, and pillows are provided. We have a washer and dryer available on the base for volunteers to use as well. While we recommend bringing items to ensure personal comfort and a good night's rest, please be aware that space for storing personal items is limited. There is a CVS and a Family Dollar within walking distance. There are other grocery stores within a 15 minute walk.

We have electricity on the base, and most cell network providers have worked well in the area. We currently have wifi available via Starlink. There is no guarantee that there will be an outlet near your bed, so if you will need to charge your phone over night, it is best to bring your own personal portable charger.
We provide three meals a day during the five work days each week. Volunteers are responsible for their own meals on non-work days. Please note that for dinner, we will usually have a few volunteers and/or staff cook, but you will be responsible for packing your own lunch and making your own breakfast.
Breakfast items will be provided in the morning and volunteers are responsible for making their own breakfast. Types of foods typically provided include oats, bagels, toast, cereal, jam, peanut butter, cream cheese, coffee, tea, etc.
Lunch items will be provided in the morning. Volunteers are responsible for making their own lunches each day. Examples of foods available include bread, peanut butter, jelly, hummus, lunch meat, apples, bananas, etc.
Dinner is after the 3:30 pm evening meeting, around 5 pm. Examples of possible dinners include spaghetti, Greek bowls, curry, chicken and risotto, burrito bowls, other pasta dishes, burgers, tacos, salad, etc.
*Please note that these are examples, and items may vary*
Vegetarian diets can be accommodated, but vegans and those with specific dietary requirements, restrictions, or preferences will need to supplement what we can provide with items they bring or source and purchase themselves. If you have any specific food allergies, please discuss them with the Volunteer Relations Coordinator.
Our volunteer community at AHAH is diverse, with people coming from different countries and regions of the United States. We love it when our volunteers share their favorite recipes with us and even better, when they cook or demonstrate how to cook these dishes. Recently, volunteers and staff from Germany and Colombia treated us to pretzels and arepas. Not only are these activities fun, but they can also help us raise funds to extend our stay in Florida.
