By the end of this unit, you should be able to describe:
the steps in mitosis and meiosis, how the chromosomes line up in metaphase, when homologous chromosomes separate and when sister chromatids separate
differences between mitosis and meiosis
how mitosis results in two identical daughter cells
how meiosis results in 4 genetically different gametes
You should be able to trace the inheritance of
multiple genes on the same chromosome when there is no crossing over between them
multiple genes on the same chromosome when there is crossing over between them
genes on different chromosomes
Watch this video to learn about mitosis.
You should be able to describe how identical sister chromatids pull apart during metaphase, and move to opposite sides of the cell. Then the cell divides, with each cell getting a copy of each chromosome, producing identical daughter cells.
Read this if you want a review of mitosis. It is very clearly written without excess detail
Watch the above videos on mitosis, review the Khan academy tutorial. Then come up with a way to simulate mitosis using playdoh, socks, or other household objects. You will take pictures of each stage and explain what the chromosomes are doing. You are welcome to work on this with other students and check each others work (in person or on zoom), but you should submit your own simulation.
Watch this video to learn about meiosis.
You should be able to describe how it differs from mitosis, the difference between meiosis 1 and 2, how the chromosomes line up and pull apart in each step, and how this results in 4 non-identical haploid daughter cells.
