Dear Students and Parents,
As the teaching of mathematics has changed over the past several years, so has the demand for the technology available to students. Most high school students at AISJ are taking math courses and intend to eventually take an external exam such as the IB or SAT. To provide the best opportunity for our students to perform well on those exams (many of which expect the use of graphing calculators), the AISJ High School math department extensively uses graphing calculators as an integral part of our program.
Graphing calculators are required for ALL High School math classes.
We strongly encourage our math students to purchase a Texas Instrument TI-84 PLUS graphing calculator. Any of the following versions is advised, TI-84 Plus CE being the best choice. Those can be found in various colors.
If you're able to, we recommend buying this calculator while you're abroad. That will be where you will pay the best prices for this calculator. If you won’t travel and don’t have the opportunity to buy this calculator abroad, they are available from the AISJ Business Office in the Main Central Building at a cost of 2500 RAND. They are also available on
different South African websites. If you wish to purchase a GDC through the school, please do the following:
Pay by EFT (details below).
Send proof of payment to jhb-hs-office@aisj-jhb.com
Collect the calculator from the HS Office.
Account name: THE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NPC
Bank: FNB
Account number: 50460096628
Branch code: 251655
Swift code: FIRNZAJJ
Reference: Calculator + student’s name
While we realize that this is a major financial commitment, we feel that it will greatly benefit your child in the long run. There are so many calculators on the market that it is often difficult to know which will not become obsolete in only a short time. The TI-84 Plus graphing calculator will be sufficient for the next several years and certainly for the remainder of your child’s High School education.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, us at jhb-hs-office@aisj-jhb.com
Once purchased, we recommend the calculator is clearly and permanently marked/labeled to aid
identification.
Sincerely,
High School Math Department
