Literacy
Our literacy curriculum aspires to nurture in every child the skills and confidence to communicate with and understand one another and the world around them.
We do this through a focus on the core skills of reading, vocabulary building and writing, personalised to the learner’s abilities and adapted to the world around them. Our literacy curriculum always prioritises the meaningful and functional skills that will prepare learners for the future.
Our curriculum ensures that all students are exposed to a variety of ways to communicate. We strive to ensure every child is empowered to communicate with those around them.
We promote in our students a life-long love of reading, sharing books and stories that will support their comprehension; and help them to recognise and understand the meaningful vocabulary that they will encounter in the real-world throughout their lives.
We incorporate Read Write Inc, a government backed phonics scheme which, through systematic teaching and consistent routines, enables children to help reach their full potential with reading. The scheme is tailored to the individual child which includes each child having reading books and writing books targeted at their level
We teach functional writing skills that will directly benefit our students: such as typing skills, and writing a shopping list.
