Food & Nutrition

Curriculum Intent

“Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity.”

~ Guy Fieri

Food Preparation, Cooking and Nutrition is the study of the quality, safety and nutritional purposes of foods. This course aims to give you the scientific skills and knowledge base needed to understand food processes and meet society's demands for safe and sustainable food products.

The aim is for students to acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, geography and religious studies. Students learn how to follow clear instructions, be independent learners, to be able to problem solve and be resilient. We aim to inspire a ‘love of food’ culture where pupils will enjoy a range of different planned cultured meals, which provide them with the practical skills needed to confidently cook a range of dishes.  Alongside the planned practicals, the students are also encouraged to modify dishes and create their own meals, sparking imagination and creativity. This will also encourage them to trial out different flavour combinations and will develop a passion for food and cooking.

At  New forest academy we introduce them to the key topics of food preparation and nutrition through both theory and practical lessons. They will learn about food safety, nutrition, food science, food choice and food provenance.  It will enable all students to broaden their knowledge on the food industry, how this differs around the world and what impact the food industry has on the environment. It will also allow them to have the understanding of the key nutrients needed in the body and to be able to identify and create healthy dishes.
