At Hockley Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child is supported to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. As part of this commitment, we want to highlight the role of young carers in our school community and the support available to them.
Who Are Young Carers?
A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who helps to care for a family member or friend who has a physical disability, mental health condition, chronic illness, or issues related to substance misuse. This care can range from helping with practical tasks such as cleaning or cooking to providing emotional support.
Young carers may often:
Take on responsibilities beyond what is typical for their age.
Experience challenges balancing schoolwork, social life, and caring duties.
Show signs of tiredness, stress, or anxiety.
If you think your child may be a young carer, we encourage you to let us know so that we can provide them with the support they need.
Our school Young Carers Champion is Mrs G Praill. She is contactable via the school office.
We are currently working towards our Young Carers in Schools Award.
Support for Young Carers at school:
Our school provides:
A safe and confidential space where young carers can talk about their experiences.
A Young Carers Champion: Mrs G Praill (contactable via the school office)
Flexible support, including adjustments to the school day or additional academic help if needed.
Peer support groups where young carers can connect with others who understand their experiences.
External Support:
There are also many organisations and services that specialise in supporting young carers, such as:
Essex Youth Service: Offers tailored advice, respite opportunities, and social activities. You can also refer a young person, or they can self refer, by emailing young.carers@essex.gov.uk for an application form.
National Carers Helpline: 0300 123 1053
Childline: 0800 11 11
Action for Family Carers: Another Essex organisation that can also provide clubs and support.
Carers Trust: A national charity providing support and advice for young carers.
You can find more information and contacts on Young Carers, as well as a range of other issues, via our Home Support Directory.
How You Can Help
If you believe your child or another child you know may be a young carer, please contact us at 01702 202394 or email office@hockleyprimary.org for the attention of Mrs Praill. Your information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and sensitivity.
By working together, we can ensure that young carers in our school community are recognised, supported, and given the opportunities they deserve to succeed and enjoy their childhood.
